CONWAY, S.C. – The App State women’s basketball team defeated Coastal Carolina, 80-70, in Conway for the season sweep over the Chanticleers on Saturday. The Mountaineers’ victory was highlighted by impressive 3-point shooting as the team drained 15 from the arc, which matches the program’s single-game record, last set during the 2022 campaign.
“I’m really proud of our team,” said head coach Angel Elderkin. “Winning on the road is never easy and I really like the way that our team started this game today, the way that we finished. Obviously, there’s gaps during the game that we’ve got to clean up, but that’s coaching. Our effort was there, our focus was there. We were extremely intentional. This has been by far the toughest stretch for our team, so I’m just really proud of the way that we showed up today and played our brand of basketball.”
Four Mountaineers netted double-figures, led by senior Faith Alston, who scored 18 points. Alston has been the Mountaineers’ top-scorer for 15 games this season. Fifth-year senior Taylor Lewis recorded a career-high 16 points, contributing five 3-point buckets, and pulling down a team-high nine rebounds. Alston, sophomore Rylan Moffitt, and graduate student Mariah Frazier each pulled down five rebounds. Lewis and Alston also recorded three assists apiece. Sophomore Alexis Black netted 15 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the arc. Junior Emily Carver dished out a team-high six assists, while netting 13 points. Fellow junior Zada Porter dished out five assists.
App State (11-11 (5-6 SBC)) held the lead for the duration of the game while shooting 47.1% from the field, 51.7% from the arc, and 65.4% from the line. The Mountaineers saw 20 points off the bench, 16 fast break points, and 16 points off turnovers. The Black and Gold also held Coastal Carolina to five treys.
Over the course of the first quarter, Lewis led the Mountaineers with 12 points, draining all four of App State’s treys during the period. Moffitt also contributed five points, shooting a perfect 2-of-2 from the field and pulling down three rebounds. App State took a 21-16 lead to end the period. The Mountaineers’ sharp shooting spread to the second quarter, where Black and Carver combined for 17 of App State’s 26 points in the period. Black drained 3-of-3 from the arc, while Carver shot a perfect 2-of-2 from the arc and 2-of-2 from the line. The Mountaineers kept a steady 10-point lead at halftime, 47-37. Over the course of the first half, App State shot 50% from the field, 55.6% from the arc, and 87.5% from the line.
Alston led the Mountaineers through the third quarter, netting 11 points and four rebounds. The Black and Gold also held Coastal Carolina to 12 points in the third quarter, while causing seven turnovers. At the close of the third quarter, App State had a 17-point lead, 66-49. The Chanticleers found momentum in the fourth quarter as the Mountaineers fought through a scoring drought. CCU cut the lead to 76-70, but Alston, Lewis, and Carver drained a total of five free throws to put the game away, 80-70.
