BOONE, N.C. — App State cornerback Tyrek Funderburk, who intercepted two passes in the 55-27 win against Georgia Southern, has been named the Sun Belt Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

It’s the second straight week that an App State cornerback has been honored, as Ethan Johnson received recognition following the win at James Madison on Nov. 18.

Funderburk finished the regular season as the league’s co-leader with four interceptions, including a pair of pick-six touchdown returns at Wyoming and ULM. His first-quarter interception against Georgia Southern set up an App State field goal from Michael Hughes.

Right after App State took a 24-17 lead in the final minute of the first half, Funderburk broke up a pass on the first play of the next drive, then intercepted a second-down throw and returned the ball 17 yards to the Georgia Southern 39. Hughes knocked in a 28-yard field goal as the half ended to push the margin to double figures.

In addition to the two interceptions, Funderburk finished the Senior Day win with two pass breakups and four tackles, including one stop behind the line of scrimmage.
