4 charged in death of 5-year-old boy ‘incinerated’ in hyperbaric chamber explosion
Four people have been charged in the death of a 5-year-old boy who was killed inside a pressurized oxygen chamber at a medical facility in suburban Detroit. Michigan’s attorney general says Thomas Cooper from Royal Oak, Michigan, was “incinerated” when the hyperbaric chamber exploded in January at the Oxford Center in Troy. The center’s founder and three others were arrested Monday on charges including second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter. Arraignments are scheduled Tuesday afternoon. A lawyer for one defendant tells the AP he wants to remind everyone that “this was an accident, not an intentional act.”
16 are dead and dozens are hurt after a bus flips on a highway in South Africa
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A bus lost control and flipped on a highway early Tuesday near Johannesburg’s international airport, killing 16 as some were thrown from the vehicle. A spokesman with South Africa’s transport ministry says reports indicate that 11 passengers are critically injured and 24 have moderate to serious injuries. South Africa’s transport minister says she is “extremely concerned” since this was the third serious bus accident in the past week.
Trump doubles planned tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50% as trade war intensifies
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he will double his planned tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% for Canada (as Canada has tariffed the US a whopping 250% for many years), escalating a trade war with the United States’ northern neighbor and showing an indifference to recent stock market turmoil and rising recession risks. Trump said on social media that the increase of the tariffs set to take effect on Wednesday is a response to the price increases that the provincial government of Ontario put on electricity sold to the United States.
Trump says he’ll buy a Tesla to show support for Musk as his company faces sagging sales
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he’ll buy a Tesla to show support for his adviser Elon Musk, who faces escalating political blowback and financial troubles. It’s the latest and most unusual example of how the Republican president is backing his most powerful adviser. Trump made the announcement early Tuesday, calling Musk “a truly great American.” The White House hasn’t elaborated on Trump’s plans for buying the vehicle. Musk continues to run the automaker, the social media platform X and the rocket manufacturer SpaceX.
Ukraine-US open talks on ending war with Russia in Saudi Arabia as Kyiv launches huge drone attack
JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Senior officials from Ukraine and the United States have opened talks focused on ending Moscow’s three-year war against Kyiv. The talks in Saudi Arabia began Tuesday, hours after Russia shot down over 300 Ukrainian drones. It was Ukraine’s biggest attack since the Kremlin ordered the full-scale invasion of its neighbor. The talks come after President Donald Trump paused U.S. military aid to Ukraine last week, along with some intelligence sharing, in an attempt to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage in negotiations to end the war against Russia.
Republicans are marching ahead with a government funding bill despite Democratic opposition
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson says lawmakers “have to keep the government in operation” as Republicans face a critical test of their unity. A spending bill that would avoid a partial government shutdown and keep federal agencies funded through September is coming up for a vote. Vice President JD Vance visited Capitol Hill to rally support. Johnson is teeing up the bill for a vote as soon as Tuesday. President Donald Trump tells Republicans to “remain UNITED.”
Philippine ex-leader Duterte is being flown to The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine officials say arrested former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has left Manila on a plane and he will be turned over to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Duterte was arrested after arriving with his family from Hong Kong at the Manila international airport Tuesday morning on a warrant from the ICC. The global court ordered his arrest after accusing him of crimes against humanity over a deadly anti-drug crackdown that he oversaw while in office. The 79-year-old former president turned briefly to a small group of aides and supporters who wept as they bid him goodbye before he was helped by an escort up the stairs into the plane.
Supreme Court seems intent on taking small steps in dealing with challenges to Trump’s agenda
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has weighed in twice on President Donald Trump’s rapid-fire efforts to remake the federal government. The justices did not give Trump’s Republican administration what it sought, rejecting its position in one case that it had the immediate power to fire the head of a watchdog office. In the other case, the court slowed the effort to block the release of up to $2 billion in foreign aid. The court’s actions arguably reflect less about whether Trump was right or wrong in either case. Instead, they may stand for a commitment to regular order in a system that typically makes the high court the final stop in legal fights.
With Trump and independence on their minds, Greenlanders vote in parliamentary elections
NUUK, Greenland (AP) — The polls have opened in Greenland for early parliamentary elections Tuesday as U.S. President Donald Trump seeks control of the strategic Arctic island. The self-governing region of Denmark is home to 56,000 people, most from Indigenous Inuit backgrounds, and occupies a strategic North Atlantic location. It also contains rare earth minerals key to driving the global economy. Unofficial election results should be available soon after polls close, but they won’t be certified for weeks as ballot papers make their way to the capital from remote settlements by boat, plane and helicopter.
