Town of Boone Enacting Stage 2 Water Restrictions, Effective July 1st, 2026
BOONE, N.C. – June 25, 2026 – The Town of Boone will enact Stage 2 Water Restrictions effective July 1, 2026, due to ongoing extreme drought conditions. The decision comes following a recommendation from Town of Boone Public Works staff, who have continuously monitored the Town’s water supply sources throughout the drought.
Stage 2 Water Restrictions:
Under Stage 2 Water Restrictions, residential and commercial Town of Boone water customers are prohibited from engaging in the following activities unless specifically authorized by the Town of Boone pursuant to § 50.309:
– Watering lawns, landscaping, gardens, parks, athletic fields, and golf courses, except
under limited approved conditions.
– Installing new landscaping that requires irrigation; drought-tolerant and native
plantings are encouraged.
– Filling or refilling swimming pools, hot tubs, spas, and wading pools.
– Washing vehicles, boats, airplanes, and other equipment unless a water reclamation
or reuse system is used.
– Washing driveways, sidewalks, buildings, parking lots, and other outdoor surfaces.
– Using water from fire hydrants for non-emergency purposes.
– Operating ornamental fountains, ponds, and similar water features.
– Serving drinking water in restaurants unless requested by the customer.
– Operating water-cooled equipment that does not recycle water, except when
medically necessary.
– Using washable dishes and utensils in commercial food establishments when
disposable or biodegradable alternatives are available and can be used effectively.
– Any unnecessary or intentional waste of water.

The Town of Boone may impose civil penalties for violations of these mandatory restrictions. At this time, no water-use limits or surcharges have been imposed; however, this may change depending on future drought conditions.
