Laurel Springs, NC — April 16, 2026: A new grassroots initiative, Close the Gap NC, is calling for North Carolina to update its age of consent laws to better reflect modern standards of child protection and public safety.
North Carolina currently sets the age of consent at 16, placing it below the standard adopted by most states. Advocates with Close the Gap NC are working to raise awareness and build community support for legislation that would align the law with an age of 18, while maintaining reasonable close-in-age protections.
“This is not about punishment or politics,” said Joe Nehls, founder of the initiative. “It’s about prevention. When laws don’t reflect reality, gaps form, and those gaps are where harm happens.”
The campaign will focus on community engagement across North Carolina, including public conversations, local media outreach, and a petition drive aimed at demonstrating broad public support for reform. Organizers are also working to connect with state legislators and community leaders ahead of the next legislative session.
Close the Gap NC emphasizes a prevention-first approach, focusing on clear boundaries, informed families, and stronger legal alignment. The initiative’s guiding message, “Strong Roots, Safe Children,” reflects its broader mission to address the conditions that allow harm to occur—not just the outcomes after the fact.
“Most people assume the law already protects teenagers at a higher standard,” Joe said. “When they learn the reality, they want to talk about it. That conversation is where change begins.”
Community members are encouraged to get involved by signing the petition, attending local events, and participating in open discussions about youth protection and legal standards in North Carolina.
