UEFA, CONCACAF and AFC accuse FIFA of ‘deception’ and ‘breach of trust’ over World Cup plans
UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC believe that FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s recent plan to sell an interest in the World Cup was a “fundamental breach of trust” with the institutions world soccer’s governing body serves. In an “open letter to the football family” UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC also say that “when trust is broken through deception, when an individual places himself above the collective that entrusted him with authority, that duty has been abandoned.” UEFA runs soccer in Europe, CONCACAF does the same for North, Central America and the Caribbean, while the AFC governs the sport in Asia.
Chiefs’ Eric Bieniemy returns to practice after wife’s shooting at their Virginia home
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has returned to the Kansas City Chiefs for his first practice since his wife was shot at their Virginia home. His 27-year-old son has been arrested in the shooting. Bieniemy was welcomed by fans as he joined the team at Missouri Western State University. His son faces three charges, but court appearances have delayed for a mental health evaluation. Bieniemy had been in touch with Chiefs coach Andy Reid during his absence. He previously left the Chiefs to call plays for the Commanders but returned after a stint with UCLA and the Bears to replace Matt Nagy, now the offensive coordinator of the Giants.

The list of players who finished the 2025 season injured was almost a who’s-who of some of the NFL’s biggest stars. There was two-time MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes, who could only watch the end of a disappointing six-win season for Kansas City after going down with a torn ACL in Week 15. Three-time All-Pro Micah Parsons was only a spectator in the postseason in his first season in Green Bay after suffering his own torn ACL in December, while the San Francisco 49ers were missing stars Fred Warner, Nick Bosa and George Kittle by the end of the season.

NEW YORK (AP) — The surging New York Liberty will face Indiana on Tuesday night in a marquee WNBA matchup that will see the Fever at full strength after the league rescinded a technical foul against Caitlin Clark that would have kept her out. Clark picked up her eighth technical of the season on Saturday, the number that triggers a one-game suspension, but league officials quickly rescinded it. New York has won four straight games and seven of its last eight thanks to strong play from its top three players Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu.
Russian track and field files new claim with CAS over sanctions imposed by World Athletics
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Russia’s track and field federation says it has filed a new claim with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge sanctions imposed by World Athletics. Athletes from Russia and ally Belarus have been excluded by World Athletics from its international events since March 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces. The suspension was maintained at a council meeting in July. That prompted the Russian track federation to launch a separate appeal with CAS to try and overturn it. The federation’s new appeal targets restrictions which it says “infringe on the organisation’s rights” and prevents it fully representing Russian athletes’ interests.
Drivers are scrambling for spots in NASCAR’s Chase as the end of the regular season nears
NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — The NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway featured plenty of changes in the season point standings heading into the final month of the regular season. Denny Hamlin leads the way with 923 points, 103 points ahead of Ty Gibbs, who won Sunday’s race. Only four drivers have clinched Chase spots — Hamlin, Gibbs, Ryan Blaney and Tyler Reddick. Austin Cindric, in the 16th and last Chase spot, has 526 points. The next three races will determine not just who can get the final spots, but also the seedings that could make a difference over the final 10 races.
MLB’s worst teams in 2026 are still pretty bad, but at least they are reasonably bad
The full-blown tank is no longer trending in Major League Baseball. After a handful of infamous team performances in recent seasons — like the Rockies losing 119 games last season and the White Sox losing an MLB-record 121 games in 2024 — the worst teams have been much more competitive. In fact, there’s a decent chance that no team will lose 100 games for the first time since 2017. The worst teams are the Rockies, Angels, Athletics and Royals and all are within reach of avoiding triple-digit losses even if they play below-average baseball.
Hunter Henry ends limbo, signing a 2-year extension with Patriots through 2027
BOSTON (AP) — One of Patriots quarterback Drake Maye’s favorite offensive targets isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Tight end Hunter Henry has signed a two-year extension to remain in New England through the 2027 season. ESPN and the NFL Network reported that the extended pact has a base value of $16 million with incentives that could push it up to $20 million. It ends a period of limbo for Henry, who was about to enter the final season of the previous three-year extension he signed in 2024.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson finds himself in the same position he wanted to shed during the offseason. He’s still on the Colts’ roster, still battling Riley Leonard for the backup job to Daniel Jones. No, this is not what Richardson or the Colts envisioned as the former Florida star entered his fourth pro season, trying to prove yet again he can stay healthy, be productive and emerge as the franchise quarterback. But that’s what he’s trying to do this summer.
