Men’s Recap

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Appalachian State men’s cross country placed five of the top-seven runners en route to the team title at the USC Upstate Invitational on Saturday morning.

The Mountaineers dominated the field, finishing with 18 points. Wingate finished second with 91 points and Milligan rounded out the top-three with 112 points.

In all, App State claimed eight of the top-15 spots in the race.

Gable Dershem led the Black and Gold across the finish line, finishing second overall in a 8k PR time of 25:48.4. Finishing right behind Dershem in third place was Ian Foley, who posted a time of 25:50.8.

Collin Loy was fifth in 26:02.1, Dakota Mendenahall was sixth in 26:02.3 and Ben Cignarale finished seventh in 26:11.5.

Michael Flanagan claimed 10th place in 26:24.3, while Ryan Brown and Zachary Mercer finished 12th and 14th in 26:30.5 and 26:41.6, respectively.

“Our pack stayed with the plan through the first two miles,” said head coach Michael Curcio. “We had a different top-five for the third meet in a row, which shows how balanced we are. We have the depth to compete for another Sun Belt title. Gable and Ian did a job closing in the final two miles.”

The Mountaineers will be idle next weekend, before competing at the HPU VertKlasse Invitational on Oct. 12.

Women’s Recap

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — For the second straight race, Phylissa Greeley finished first overall and Appalachian State women’s cross country claimed the team title at the USC Upstate Invitational on Saturday morning.

The Mountaineers finished with 23 points. Campbell was second with 66 points and Sun Belt foe Georgia State was third with 82 points.

App State posted three of the top-five finishers in the race and nine of the top-20 overall.

“While our times weren’t super fast, our top-five kept tight as a pack and chased after Campbell,” said head coach Michael Curcio. “I’m happy for Phylissa. A runner was able to pull away from the pack early, but she was able to keep her composure and move past her just at the crest of the final hill to get the win.”

Greeley, who has already been named Sun Belt Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week twice this season, crossed first for the second consecutive race in 18:04.8

Izzy Evely recorded a third-place finish in 18:14.15 and Emily Fedders was fourth with a time of 18:17.7.

Samantha Kolor finished sixth in 18:21.9 and Katelyn Butler was ninth in 18:30.1.
