BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State men’s and women’s cross country will compete at the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Newton, N.C.. The Mountaineers were sending a select group of runners to the Winthrop Asics Invitational on Saturday, but that meet has been canceled due to pending weather associated with Hurricane Florence.

At the season opening Covered Bridge Open on Aug. 31, the Mountaineers finished second of 10 teams. Collin Loy led the Black and Gold across the finish line, finishing fifth overall in 25:43.28. Isaac Benz finished right behind in sixth place in 25:43.53. Ryan Brown and Michael Flanagan finished ninth and 10th with times of 25:20.42 and 25:41.67, respectively.

Appalachian State finished second of nine teams at the season opening Covered Bridge Open on Aug. 31. Phylissa Greeley finished fourth overall, in a 5k PR time of of 17:37.25. Her time also ranked as the seventh fastest 5k time in program history. Katelyn Butler was right behind in fifth place in 17:55.39 and Emily Fedders placed sixth with a time of 17:56.50. The Mountaineers had two other top-10 finishers in Samantha Kolor, who crossed ninth in 17:58.24 and Izzy Evely, who was 10th in 17:58.39. For her efforts in the meet, Greeley was named Sun Belt Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.
In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Women’s Sports at Appalachian State, the women’s squad will host the Lady Apps Alumni Run on Sept. 22 at 9 a.m. at Kennedy Trails at State Farm Field. Both teams will compete again on Sept. 29 at the USC Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C.
