WTEN: Women’s Tennis Finishes Jimmy Powell Invitational

 

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women’s tennis finished the Jimmy Powell Invitational on Sunday. 

 

Hosted by Elon, the Mountaineers went up against Winthrop, Davidson and the hosts. The two-day event consisted of three singles flights (JP Maroon, JP Phoenix and JP Gold) and two doubles flights (JP Maroon Doubles, JP Gold Doubles).

Appalachian finished with 12 wins across singles and doubles action including a singles flight championship and a runner-up finish in singles action. 

Highlighting the weekend was María José Zacarias (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/La Loma Centro Deportivo), who finished with an unblemished 3-0 record en route to capturing the Gold Singles flight. She started the tournament with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Winthrop’s Tayla Van Eck before downing Alyssa Hahn of Davidson in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6. The sophomore capped off the run with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Alexa Abele (Davidson) to claim the bracket. 

Kate Earnhardt (Concord, N.C./Concord) had a solid weekend advancing to the Maroon Singles championship match. She defeated a pair of opponents from Davidson, topping Gabrielle Centenari in the first round (6-2, 6-1) and advancing to the final round with a win over Megan Scholvinck in a hard-fought three-set affair, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5. In the finals, Earnhardt fell in the first set before a second-set win (6-0) forced a third-set, but would fall to Elon’s Suzanne Zenoni, 4-6, 6-0, 5-10. Teodora Sevo (Futog, Serbia/Domom Ucenika Futog) defeated Montana Moore (Phoenix), 6-4, 6-3, for her lone singles win of the weekend.

In the Phoenix Flight, Sandra Anglesjö (Norrköping, Östergötland, Sweden/Läroverkin, Norrköping) and Rebecca Morse (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Cypress Creek) both earned wins in the consolation bracket. Anglesjö defeated Alex Koniaev of Elon, 6-0, 6-4, while Morse downed Koniaev as well. She came back after falling in the first set two win the next two frames, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6. 

In doubles play,  App State notched four victories with all four coming against the Phoenix.

Earnhardt/Morse teamed up for a 7-6 victory over Paraja/Koniaev (Elon), and Anglesjö/Sevo notched a convincing 6-2 win over Moore/Wallace of the hosts in the second round.

Zacarias and Heidi Swope (Weddington, N.C./Weddington) picked up a 6-3 win over Nayar/Archer (Elon), and later defeated Edo (Elon)/Mourad (Winthrop), 6-1, for a pair of victories.

App State continue the campaign when it heads to Statesboro to participate in the Georgia Southern Shootout next weekend Oct. 12-14.
