CHARLESTON, S.C. – Appalachian State women’s tennis concluded its first fall tournament at the College of Charleston Invitational, highlighted by a pair of doubles flight titles.
App State totaled nine singles wins and seven victories in doubles play against schools in Charlotte, Wofford, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern and Sun Belt foes, Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern.
The tandems of Cassie McLay (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton Community)/María José Zacarias (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Centro Deportivo) (A1 Doubles) and Virginia Poggi (Civitavecchia, Italy/Ernest Hemingway)/Sandra Anglesjö (Norrköping, Östergötland, Sweden/Fria Läroverken) (B2 Doubles) finished a combined 6-0 to earn flight championships. In their first fall tournaments, McLay and Poggi put on solid efforts with three wins each in singles and doubles action.
McLay/Zacarias dealt Halli Trinkle/Elizabeth Nowak (CofC) a 6-1 win in the opening round before downing Rocio Safont/Emma Scott (Charlotte) a 6-2 defeat. In the title round, the duo cruised to a 6-2 victory against a second Charlotte pairing in Immie Cowper/Jenna Dean.
Poggi and Anglesjö started their run with a 6-2 triumph against Ava Turner/Clara Errard (CofC). The Black and Gold partners earned a 7-5 win over Wofford’s Alexandra Hildell/Brittney Wilbur to advance to the finals. Poggi/Anglesjö defeated Alexa Tiefel/Maria Khomchenko in convincing 6-0 fashion.
Teodora Sevo (Futog, Serbia/Ucenika Futog)/Kate Earnhardt (Concord, N.C./Concord) teamed up for a 6-3 win over Charleston Southern in the first round in the A2 Doubles Flight.
In singles, McLay defeated a pair of opponents from Charlotte in the A1 Flight while downing Jenna Vroman in a come-from-behind three-set win, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6). McLay’s second win against the 49ers led to a fifth-place finish against Imperato in straight sets. Poggi won her first-round matchup against Alicja Zdunika of Coastal Carolina, 6-1, 7-5. After a semifinal setback, Poggi finished fifth in the A2 Flight with back-to-back wins over Charleston Southern and Wofford.
After falling in the first round in the A1 Singles bracket, Earnhardt bounced back with a pair of victories. The redshirt-sophomore downed Michelle Schmitz (Charleston Southern) before upending Iryna Vardanian (Coastal Carolina), the Sun Belt’s reigning Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year, in a tough three-set affair (6-2, 5-7, 13-11).
Sevo notched a first-round victory in the A1 bracket by also earning an impressive win over Vardanian in a straight-set 6-0, 6-3 victory.
App State will travel to Wilmington, N.C. for the UNC Wilmington Invite from Sept. 27-29.
