WSOC: Mountaineers Seeded Fourth in Sun Belt Championship

NEW ORLEANS – Appalachian State University women’s soccer enters the 2018 Sun Belt Championship held in Foley, Ala. as the No. 4 seed. The Mountaineers will face No. 5 seed and four-time defending Sun Belt Tournament champions, South Alabama, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. (ET) at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.

App State and South Alabama are the first match of the tournament on Wednesday and will be streamed live on ESPN+. The winner will advance to the semifinal round to face the winner of the Texas State (No. 1) and Troy (No. 8) matchup on Friday at 5 p.m. (ET).

Appalachian is the fourth seed in the tournament for the third time in five seasons since joining the Sun Belt, while Appalachian and USA are matching up for the fourth straight time in the postseason.

App State is 2-3-1 all-time in the Sun Belt Tournament with both of its wins coming as the fourth seed in the 2015 and 2016 brackets.

Going into 2018, the Mountaineers were picked to finish eighth but more than doubled its win total from 2017 en route to a 9-8-1 mark and a 6-4 record in Sun Belt play. The six conference victories are the most since joining the league and the highest number of conference wins since the seven SoCon wins in 2012.

Appalachian ended the regular season with an exhilarating 3-1 victory over second-place Little Rock, snapping the Trojans’ six-match win streak. App defeated two of the top three Sun Belt teams in LR and Coastal Carolina earlier in the campaign.

The Mountaineers fell to the Jaguars earlier this season in a narrow 1-0 setback with the lone difference being a penalty score in the second period. App controlled majority of the game and held an 11-6 edge in shots.
