WSOC: Greer Garners First Team All-Sun Belt Honors

NEW ORLEANS – For the first time in her career, Appalachian State University women’s soccer senior Kat Greer (Cayce, S.C./Brookland Cayce) was named First-Team All-Sun Belt, as the league announced postseason awards on Wednesday.

Greer is the first Mountaineer to garner all-conference honors since Jane Cline in 2016 when she was named all-first team, while the Cayce, S.C., native is the third player with Lindsey Tully (2015) and Cline to be a first-team selection since joining the conference.

The midfielder has helped App enjoy a bounce-back season more than doubling its win total from 2017 with a 9-8-1 mark and a 6-4 Sun Belt record. Appalachian finished as the fourth seed in the Sun Belt Tournament after being picked to finish eighth in the league. The six victories in league play are the most since joining the conference and the highest number of conference wins since the seven SoCon wins in 2012.

“Kate’s journey over the past year has been incredible,” head coach Sarah Strickland said. “When you stop and think that a year ago she was preparing for ACL reconstruction, and then look at her performance this year, you realize what a huge testament her return has been to her faith and perseverance. We are grateful to Dr. Parker and our athletic trainer Maggie Berkowitz for their hard work over the last year. This program has rallied around Kat and every other girl that has been injured to help them not just return to play, but return to confidently complete.”

Greer registered a team high with four goals and two assists. The Cayce, S.C., native’s 10 points is tied for a team best, which all came during conference play. Greer is tied for seventh in the Sun Belt in goals and tied for 10th in points during league action. Greer started and finished conference play off strong, as in the first weekend she registered three goals in back-to-back road wins including her first multi-goal performance in a 2-1 win at Georgia Southern. It led to her first-ever Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week award.

Over the past three games going into the Sun Belt Championship, Greer has one score and two helpers and her assist on Sunday aided in the game-tying goal in a 3-1 triumph over Little Rock. She has nine goals and three assists over the past two seasons for 21 points.

App State will face No. 5 seed South Alabama on Wednesday at 11 a.m. (ET) in Foley, Ala. at the Foley Sports Complex. Fans can stream the match on ESPN+
