CONWAY, S.C. – App State women’s soccer fell to Coastal Carolina, 1-0, in the Sun Belt road opener on Thursday evening at CCU Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers fall to 3-5-2 (0-1-1 SBC) while the hosts improved to 4-5-1 (2-1-0 SBC) on the season.
After scoring a season-high three goals on Sunday in the win over Wofford, the Mountaineers were unsuccessful on the offensive side of the ball against the Chanticleers. The Coastal defense held the Apps to just nine shots, with one on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Kerry Eagleston (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) was busy for App State, making three saves.
Coastal Carolina was able to breakthrough the Mountaineer defense in the 51st minute when Hannah Miller finished a ball played in by Mackenzie Gibbs. One goal was enough for Coastal to notch its second conference win of the season. The Mountaineers pressed after conceding the lone goal, but were unable to find the equalizer. Appalachian also held the advantage in corner kicks, taking seven compared to three by the Chanticleers.
Emma McGibany (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) led the team with two shots, while Hulda Agustsdottir’s (Husavik, Iceland/Völsungur) header in the second half was the lone shot on goal.
App State looks to bounce back Sunday (9/29) as they host Georgia Southern at 1 p.m. The Apps are currently 3-0-2 at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex, outscoring opponents 13-3 at home.
