BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State’s Matt Zovistoski, who wrestles at 149 pounds, received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships on Tuesday afternoon.
Zovistoski will join App State automatic qualifiers and Southern Conference champions Randall Diabe (197 pounds), Cary Miller (285) and Codi Russell (133) next week in Pittsburgh, where the NCAA event will be held from Thursday-Saturday at PPG Paints Arena.
With 33 wrestlers filling every bracket in Pittsburgh, there were five at-large spots available for the 149-pound wrestlers who didn’t qualify automatically. The at-large selections were based on head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI), coaches ranking and conference tournament finish.
Zovistoski (27-13 overall) was at No. 26 in the most recent RPI and No. 28 in the most recent Coaches’ Panel rankings. In addition to going 5-1 in SoCon duals and placing third at the SoCon Championship, where two automatic bids at 149 pounds were awarded, he won seven matches at the Southern Scuffle.
