WREST: Blakely, Fiscella Win Bracket Titles at Southeast Open

ROANOKE, Va. — All four attached App State wrestlers placed in the top three of their brackets Sunday at the Southeast Open hosted by Virginia Tech, with Mason Fiscella (184 pounds) and Barrett Blakely (174) finishing first in their weight classes.

In all, the Mountaineers had 15 freshmen (redshirt and true) competing in the Freshman/Sophomore Division. Eleven of the entries were unattached true freshmen.

Michael Burchell (heavyweight) was also a finalist in his bracket, and classmate Dawson Bates took third place at 141 pounds.

Fiscella faced unattached teammate Julian Gorring in the 184 final and used a riding time advantage to break a 3-3 tie in a match that extended through multiple tiebreaker periods. Fiscella reached the final with back-to-back pins and a 4-2 semifinal decision against West Virginia’s Mitchell Potterf.

Blakely capped a 4-0 day with a 9-8 decision against Gardner-Webb’s Samuel Mora in the final. He opened competition with a pin, then had a 6-4 decision against West Virginia’s John Joll and a 9-3 decision against Campbell’s Trent Knight.

Burchell claimed decisions by scores of 6-0, 4-1 and 5-3 before dropping a 9-3 decision against Andy Smith in the final. Bates won his first matches by major decision and a 3-1 decision before losing 3-2 in a semifinal and securing third place with a 3-2 decision against North Carolina’s Connor Alexander.

In addition to Gorring, unattached App State wrestlers had a strong showing at 125 pounds with three entries in the semifinal round. Carson Smith took second with a 4-2 loss to Virginia Tech’s Hunter Graf in the final, followed by Caleb Smith in third place and Sean Carter in fourth place.

Bates, Blakely, Burchell, Carson Smith and Caleb Smith all went 3-1 on Sunday. Brett Mordecai (165) enjoyed a 4-1 start with one pin before losing in his fifth match of the day.

Other unattached true freshmen to win at least one match were Tyler Kellison (2-2 at 133), Giuseppi Inserra (1-2 at 157), Garrett Starks (1-2 with a pin at 157) and Kameron Miller (1-2 with a pin at 157).

The eight pins from members of App State’s team came from Fiscella (two), Blakely, Carson Smith, Carter, Starks, Miller and Mordecai.

The first official event on the 2019-20 for head coach JohnMark Bentley’s team occurs Saturday with App State hosting the Mountaineer Invitational in Varsity Gym.
