WREST: App State Wrestling Shuts Out The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. — App State Wrestling used bonus points in eight of their 10 wins to remain unbeaten in the Southern Conference and post a 44-0 victory at The Citadel on Saturday.

With Campbell’s 27-11 win against Chattanooga, Saturday’s results set up a huge SoCon matchup Thursday between the Mountaineers (8-2 5-0) and Camels (8-2, 4-0) in Buies Creek.
The dual in Charleston ended in dramatic fashion, as Will Formato erased a 6-3 deficit in the final minute of the third period to force overtime against Dazjon Casto at 165 pounds. After a minute session with no takedowns, Formato didn’t allow an escape in the first 30-second tiebreaker, then got a quick escape and late takedown to clinch the victory.
The Mountaineers collected bonus points in the first four matches, as Thomas Flitz began the dual with a first-period pin against Kyle Kretzer at 174 pounds and Julian Gorring added a tech fall by a 17-2 score against Cooper Youngblood at 184.
Making the second dual appearance of his career, Demazio Samuel recorded his first dual win with a tech fall by a 20-3 score against Martin Duane, and Cary Miller won by a 14-4 major decision against Michael McAleavey at 285 pound to push the lead to 20-0.
Sean Carter earned a victory by a 7-2 decision against Jordie White at 125 pounds before the Mountaineers benefited from another pin, this one by Codi Russell in the second period of his match against Nathan Orosco at 133 pounds.
The lead increased to 33-0 on a shutout from Bradley Irwin, who won by a 13-0 major decision against Jacob Dado at 141 pounds, and Jonathan Millner won a 9-1 major decision against Selwyn Porter at 149 pounds.
Matt Zovistoski claimed a 9-0 major decision against Douglas Gudenburr leading up to Formato’s victory in the finale.
