BOONE, N.C. – Highlighted by games against UAB, Georgia Tech, South Carolina and Clemson, Appalachian State University women’s basketball head coach Angel Elderkin has announced the non-conference schedule for the 2018-19 season.
Coach Elderkin and the staff stacked the non-conference slate, as the Mountaineers face five teams that went to the postseason and amassed 20 wins, while four programs finished in the top 100 in the RPI. In addition, App’s non-conference foes combined for a .522 win percentage in 2017-18.
“Our non-conference schedule is loaded with solid programs that will challenge us at home and on the road,” coach Elderkin stated. ” The level of competition throughout will prepare us for the road ahead in the Sun Belt Conference.”
The Mountaineers will play five of their games at the Holmes Convocation Center and six on the road.
Before the season opener, App will host Lees-McRae in an exhibition contest on Nov. 3.
App will have a tough start to the season, playing three of the first four games on the road in a span of nine days. The Black and Gold will play a pair of WNIT squads in UAB (Nov. 9) and Georgia Tech (Nov. 11) two days apart. The Blazers posted a solid 27-7 mark en route to a Conference USA regular season title, an appearance in the Conference USA Tournament final. The Yellow Jackets went 20-14, giving the teams combined for a 47-21 mark and at least one win in the postseason.
For the first time since 2014, App State will host UNCG four days later on Nov. 15 in the home opener followed by a Nov. 17 showdown against Davidson on the road.
The next two games will take place at the Holmes Center against NCAA Tournament participant and Colonial Athletic Association Tournament champions, Elon on Nov. 20. App finishes the back-to-back homestand against Marshall five days later.
App State and ETSU will meet once again for another installment between the former SoCon rivals on Nov. 28 in the first game after Thanksgiving. ETSU advanced to the SoCon Tournament final before falling to Mercer while earning a berth in the WNIT. The Mountaineers’ first game in December will take place against College of Charleston at the Holmes Center on Dec. 2.
Appalachian will then travel to Columbia to face 2017 national champion and perennial powerhouse, South Carolina. App and USC will face each other for the first time since the 2011 WNIT. The Gamecocks finished with a 29-7 mark last season and made it to the NCAA Elite Eight before falling to eventual NCAA runner-up, UConn. The Dec. 5 contest is the first of a three-game series.
Following a Dec. 17 matchup against Wofford, the Mountaineers finish the non-conference slate against ACC foe, Clemson. The last time both teams squared off, the Mountaineers brought home a 67-62 win.
App State returns a loaded squad that was the least experienced in the league, as it was the only team in the conference not to start a junior or senior. All 10 letterwinners including its leading scorers in Pre Stanley and Tierra Wilson and All-Sun Belt Third Team selection, Bayley Plummer, return. Madi Story, who was Preseason All-First Team Sun Belt, will return following a torn ACL. UCF transfer Ashley Polacek is eligible after sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules.
Tip times will be announced at a later date.
