BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The App State women’s track and field team opened competition Monday at the Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships with a conference champion and silver medalist in the women’s 5,000 meters, a second-place finish in the women’s distance medley relay, and a school record in the women’s 60 meters. At the close of the first day, the Mountaineers were third in the team standings.
Senior Jasmine Donohue garnered gold in the women’s 5,000 meters, stopping the clock at 16:40.61. Following close behind was Emma Russum, who secured silver with a personal best of 16:41.66.
The Mountaineers also posted a second-place finish from the women’s distance medley relay team of freshman Savannah Moore, sophomore Nicole Wells, junior Addison Ollendick-Smith, and senior Lauren Johnston, as they clocked a time of 11:35.52. Wells and Ollendick-Smith repeated as silver medalists in the DMR.
In addition to their podium finishes, Donohue, Johnston, and Ollendick-Smith advanced to Tuesday’s finals in other events. In the women’s mile prelims, Donohue qualified second (4:53.68) and Johnston was fifth (4:57.33), while Ollendick-Smith clocked a personal best of 2:12.34 to qualify for the finals after finishing fifth in the women’s 800-meter prelims.
Sophomore Kendall Johnson broke the App State record in the women’s 60-meter prelims after clocking a personal best of 7.42 to place sixth and qualify for Tuesday’s final. The previous women’s 60-meter program record was 7.44, set in 2005 by Jennifer Claud.
In the women’s long jump, freshman Jahaila Wright landed ninth with a leap of 5.61m (18′ 5″).
“After today’s events, we’re in third place, and the mood going into tomorrow is very positive,” women’s distance coach Annie Richards said. “Jasmine Donohue and Emma Russum should be proud of how they worked together to achieve their one-two finish in the 5,000 meters. Our women’s DMR had a great run as well.”
Competition resumes at 11 a.m. ET (10 a.m. CT) with the multis. Field events are slated to start at 12:15 p.m. ET (11:15 a.m. CT), and events on the track are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. CT). The meet is available to stream on ESPN+.
