Wilkes Community College Respiratory Therapy Students Win State Championship, Advance to Nationals

Wilkesboro, N.C. – Wilkes Community College (WCC) is proud to announce that its second-year Respiratory Therapy students captured first place at the North Carolina Society for Respiratory Care (NCSRC) Sputum Bowl held last Thursday, October 9, 2025, defeating five other colleges from across the state.

This impressive victory earns the WCC team a spot at the AARC National Congress in December, where they will represent both WCC and the state of North Carolina on the national stage.

The winning team, known as “The Mucus Mafia,” includes Captain Sydney Whitaker and team members Carley Watson, Kaleigh Bitner, and Bethany Jarvis. Their hard work, skill, and professionalism highlight the strength of WCC’s Respiratory Therapy program and the dedication of its students.

Their achievement is a testament to the knowledge, teamwork, and professionalism they’ve developed through our program,” said Tori Johnson, Respiratory Therapy Program Chair at WCC. “We couldn’t be prouder of the way they represent our college and the respiratory care profession.”

The NCSRC has generously offered sponsorship to support the team’s travel to nationals, and the students are exploring additional fundraising opportunities to help cover remaining expenses.
