BOONE, N.C. — App State Athletics has hired Brittney Whiteside as Chief Strategy Officer, the department announced Wednesday.

A respected college administrator, Whiteside was previously on staff at App State from 2015-19. She served as a senior associate athletics director and the senior woman administrator at the end of her tenure.

Whiteside will serve as a member of the executive leadership team, overseeing the department’s long-term planning and positioning in the rapidly evolving collegiate athletics landscape. She will lead App State’s student-athlete NIL and revenue sharing operations. She will also develop key strategies for the growth and continued success of App State Athletics.

“We are excited to welcome Brittney back to App State,” Director of Athletics Doug Gillin said. “She believes in and exemplifies our vision for aggressively pursuing comprehensive excellence in the changing collegiate athletics landscape. She is a dynamic and strategic leader who will enhance App State Athletics’ growth and success.”

In her new role, Whiteside will draw from her extensive experience, which includes three years as an administrator at the University of Virginia as well as more than two years as an executive with Altius Sports Partners.

“Returning to App State is both a personal and professional full-circle moment,” Whiteside said. “The university has a strong tradition and ambitious vision for the future, and I’m honored to help shape what’s next. I look forward to working alongside our coaches, staff, campus partners and the broader Appalachian community to drive innovation and continue providing an exceptional experience for our student-athletes in the new era of college athletics. There is no better time to be a Mountaineer!”

As Vice President at Altius Sports Partners, Whiteside spearheaded the launch of the company’s General Manager Program and led its business development efforts. Altius Sports Partners is a premier strategic advisory firm supporting more than 40 college athletics departments and brands with comprehensive solutions in NIL strategy, education, operations and brand development.

Whiteside was hired as an executive associate athletics director at UVa in 2019 and promoted to deputy athletics director in 2021. She oversaw the Cavaliers’ external operations, Title IX and gender equity areas, while supervising several sports.

Upon her departure from App State in July 2019, she was a senior associate athletics director and SWA with oversight of the external operations units of marketing, ticketing, licensing and sponsorships, as well as the student-athlete support areas of student-athlete leadership and development. She was the supervisor for several sports.

During her App State tenure, she also provided oversight to the student-athlete support areas of sports medicine and strength and conditioning. She created the Mountaineer R.I.S.E program, which is a comprehensive life skills and leadership development program that aims to develop, support and prepare student-athletes for life after athletics. She was instrumental in implementing a comprehensive care model for student-athlete health and well-being by hiring the department’s first sports dietitian, mental performance coach and sports psychologist, while transitioning the department to a medical model of care.

Early in her athletics administration career, Whiteside gained experience as a director of external engagement at Missouri (2014-15) and a special assistant to the athletics director at her alma mater, Wright State (2012-14).

Whiteside was a women’s basketball student-athlete at Wright State from 2003-07. She was a four-time Horizon League all-conference and all-defensive team performer and finished her career ranked second on the Raiders’ all-time scoring list. She went on to play professionally in Germany before returning to the United States to begin her career in athletics administration.

Whiteside graduated with a B.S. in psychology in 2007. She went on to earn a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from Wright State in 2012.

She currently serves on Wright State University’s Board of Trustees.
