REUNION, Fla. – The Appalachian State women’s golf team finished tied atop the team leaderboard at the Bucknell Spring Break Intercollegiate and were crowned co-champions of the tournament with Richmond.
The Mountaineers carded a two-round score of 610 (+34) and captured their first multi-round tournament trophy since 2016.
After the first round, the Mountaineers saw themselves holding the lead with a score of 303 (+15) and a three-shot lead over the Richmond Spiders. A second-round team score of 307 (+19) was enough to secure a tie atop the leaderboard.
“We were glad to be in the position that we were in,” head coach Heather Brown said. “We gave ourselves opportunities with our putters but were not able to capitalize on them. All in all, we knew the areas in which we needed to improve and in doing so, maintain our position.
Senior Joliana Elias (74-77) and sophomore Abby Bolt (76-75) led the way, each firing a two-round score of 151 (+7) to give them a share of fourth place individually. Junior Melany Chong (78-77) and freshman Kayla Ward (75-80) tied for ninth place at 11 over par, and senior Patricia Thompson finished in a tie for 17th at 16 over (82-78).
“I was happy with what I saw, and we recognized definite areas of improvement,” Brown said. “We want to be in the top half of the field in every event, so finishing at the top of the leaderboard will help our confidence going into a strong field this weekend.”
The Mountaineers look to carry the momentum into their tournament next Saturday and Sunday in the Low Country Intercollegiate at Hilton Head Island, S.C.
