BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women’s basketball sophomore Lainey Gosnell (Demorest, Ga./Habersham Central) was named the College Sports Madness Sun Belt Player of the Week, announced on Monday.
Gosnell averaged 19.5 points and 7.5 rebounds through the Mountaineers two victories over the weekend against ULM and Louisiana. The Demorest, Ga., native also shot 56 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from beyond the arc and 80 percent from the charity stripe. It was the first Sun Belt sweep of the season for the Black and Gold, while the 11-3 mark at home is the best record at the Holmes Center since the 2011-12 season. Also, the 15 wins with two games left are the most wins in the Angel Elderkin era.
In the 56-51 victory over the Warhawks, Gosnell poured in a personal-high 26 points on 10-for-19 shooting from the field with five boards. She scored 16 of her points in the second half, which was half of Appalachian’s scoring output. Against the Ragin’ Cajuns, she registered her first Sun Belt double-double with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Over the past seven games, Gosnell is averaging 14.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and shooting 54.4 percent from the field, 40.5 percent from 3-point range and 81.3 percent from the line. She has scored in double figures in five straight games, which is a career long.
Gosnell and the Mountaineers have won the last three games and look to continue their solid play going into the Sun Belt Tournament. App closes the regular season in Alabama. It will face Troy on Thursday at 7 p.m. (ET).
