BOONE, N.C. – App State women’s basketball fell to Coastal Carolina, 80-53, on Saturday afternoon inside the Holmes Center.
App falls to 4-13 and 1-5 in Sun Belt play, while Coastal improves to 15-2 and 5-1 in league action.
Ashley Polacek (Ottawa, Canada/UCF) led the team with 13 points off six field goals. Pre Stanley (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge) scored 10 to round out the leaders in double figures. Brooke Bigott (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) scored five points, dished out four assists and tied the team lead with five off the glass. Lainey Gosnell (Demorest, Ga./Habersham Central) also pulled down five rebounds with seven points, and Jackie Christ (Sterling, Va./Dominion) scored a personal-high seven points off the bench.
Coastal took a commanding lead early in the contest after App hit the game’s first basket off a Gosnell layup.
The Black and Gold sliced a 15-8 deficit to three after Gosnell and Stanley scored on back-to-back buckets late in the first quarter. CCU went into the second frame with a 17-12 advantage. From then on, the Chanticleers pulled away as they outscored App by 12 in the second period.
Appalachian had open shots throughout the contest but was able to find the bottom of the net. CCU took advantage of 15 offensive rebounds in 19 second-chance points, hit 12 3-pointers and 20 free throws.
DJ Williams led three players in double figures with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Her and Aja Blount (15 points) shot a combined 14-25 from the field (Rest of the Team: 10-33).
The Mountaineers will look to regroup with the week off and a bye on Thursday. App travels to Little Rock for a 3 p.m. (ET) tilt on Saturday.
