DURHAM, N.C. — Appalachian State volleyball dropped a 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 decision at Duke on the final day of the Duke Invitational on Saturday.
In the first set, Duke (4-2) opened a 19-15 lead and held a 22-19 edge late. But the Blue Devils captured the final six points of the set to grab the opening frame by a 25-22 count.
The second set saw Duke open an 16-8 advantage midway through the frame. App State made a late charge, but came up on the short end, falling 25-20.
Set 3 was tight and the two teams found themselves knotted at 21-21 late in the frame. From there, Duke reeled off the final four points to clinch the set and victory.
In all, the Black and Gold registered 30 kills and hit .106 in the contest, while Duke posted 42 kills and hit .299.
For their efforts on the weekend, Spicer and Reilly were named to the All-Tournament Team. Spicer totaled 36 kills (3.3 k/s) and hit a sizzling .509. Reilly posted 67 total digs (6.07 d/s) and recorded the 1,000th dig of her career on Saturday.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Tuesday with a road contest at 7 p.m. versus Clemson. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
