Padres make waves at trade deadline again, unafraid to deal away one of baseball’s top prospects

General manager A.J. Preller has once again made the San Diego Padres the stars of baseball’s trade deadline. On Thursday, he traded top prospect Leo De Vries to the Athletics for closer Mason Miller. This follows Preller’s 2022 acquisition of Juan Soto. By the deadline, Preller had traded 14 players and acquired eight, including left-handers JP Sears and Nestor Cortés. Houston and Seattle were also buyers this year, while Minnesota tore down its roster. Arizona had two of the best trade chips on the market in Eugenio Suárez and Merrill Kelly, trading the former to Seattle and the latter to Texas.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin has requested a trade from the Commanders, AP sources say

Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin has asked the Washington Commanders to trade him because of a contract dispute. That’s according to two people with knowledge of the request. Both people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the negotiations were private. McLaurin has been holding in at training camp. The veteran reported to camp Sunday after skipping the first four practices and parts of the offseason program. He remains on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle injury while contract talks continue. McLaurin had 82 catches for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns last season.

Five different countries take gold medals on a wide-open day at the swim world championships

SINGAPORE (AP) — The gold medals were spread around Friday at the swimming world championships, thanks to the absence of stars Léon Marchand of France and Canadian Summer McIntosh from any finals on Day 6 in Singapore. Marchand, who has already broken the world record in the 200 IM, will try to break his own 400 IM record on Sunday, the final day. McIntosh has won three individual gold medals already and will chase two more on Saturday and Sunday as she tries for five individual golds. Only Michael Phelps has managed that at the worlds. The Netherlands, China, Hungary and the United States picked up individual golds on Friday.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — The NFL season kicked off at the annual Hall of Fame game with a moment of silence for the four people killed earlier this week by a shooter who was targeting league headquarters in New York. The gunman also wounded a league employee in the shooting Monday night. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told NBC he visited the employee for an hour on Wednesday and said he was improving. There was increased security Thursday night around Tom Benson Stadium, where Eric Allen, Jared Allen, Antonio Gates and Sterling Sharpe will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Top EU court rules that soccer governing body FIFA’s decisions can be challenged outside Switzerland

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union’s top court has ruled that some decisions by international governing bodies, such as FIFA and the IOC, can be challenged outside Switzerland, opening up a system that currently binds athletes, officials and clubs to accept verdicts there. The European Court of Justice said tribunals in 27 EU member states “must be able to carry out an in-depth review of those awards for consistency with the fundamental rules of EU law.” The ruling means EU national courts should be able to review verdicts from the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport. Switzerland isn’t a member of the EU. The decision came after a long legal fight by Belgian soccer club RFC Seraing and Maltese investment fund Doyen Sports.

Twins hit hard reset with 9 pre-deadline trades, happy with haul yet still high on for-sale club

The Minnesota Twins have traded nearly 40% of their team this week. They made nine deals including seven swaps leading up to the deadline on Thursday. Starting pitcher Chris Paddack was the first to go on Monday, followed by closer Jhoan Duran on Wednesday. The Twins traded players to various teams, including the Phillies and Dodgers, in a move to rebuild. Despite the changes, the Twins kept their All-Stars and are optimistic about their prospects.

Rookie tight end Tyler Warren is starting to find his fit at Indianapolis Colts training camp

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Tyler Warren still appreciates the blue-and-white team colors. Everything else has changed — his number, the shade of blue, even the decal on his helmet. This is what happens when the best tight end in college football makes the jump to the NFL. Warren, Penn State’s most versatile player last season, finds himself on a steep and hastened learning curve with the Indianapolis Colts. No, it’s not always easy when you’re studying a new system, working with two new quarterbacks, mingling with new teammates and getting acclimated to a new coaching staff. But Warren seems to be fitting in just fine.

Marv Levy looks forward to celebrate turning 100 at Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio

Marv Levy is celebrating his 100th birthday and enjoying the freedom of not having to hide his age anymore. The former Buffalo Bills coach will be honored with a party at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The celebration coincides with the annual induction festivities. Levy led the Bills to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances and is remembered for his resilience and humor. Despite retiring in 1997, he remains connected to the Bills and is campaigning for Steve Tasker’s Hall of Fame induction. It wasn’t until years after being hired by the Bills in 1986 when it was revealed how Levy shaved three years off his age in fear NFL teams wouldn’t employ a 61-year-old.
