Miami Dolphins’ Bayron Matos airlifted to hospital after training camp injury
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos suffered an undisclosed injury at the end of Wednesday’s practice and was flown to a hospital on a helicopter. The injury happened in the final minutes of Day 1 of the Dolphins’ training camp. The team said Matos was airlifted in stable condition. It did not release information on the injury. The 24-year-old Matos is in his second year in the NFL. He went undrafted in 2024 but signed with the Dolphins as a free agent through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. He has only been playing football since 2022 when he walked on at South Florida.
Giants open camp with Jaxson Dart in the spotlight but Russell Wilson still starting quarterback
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — So much of the attention going into New York Giants training camp is on first-round pick and quarterback of the future Jaxson Dart. But coach Brian Daboll made it clear the plan hasn’t changed and that Russell Wilson is the starter. Wilson took all of the first-team snaps in the first practice of camp, with Dart and journeyman Jameis Winston rotating second and third. Daboll won’t say whether the backup job to Wilson is up for grabs this preseason. General manager Joe Schoen deferred to the coaching staff to determine when it might be time to turn to Dart.
A historic win by 45-year-old Venus Williams resonates and shows there are no limits for excellence
WASHINGTON (AP) — There are plenty of reasons why this particular victory by Venus Williams in this particular tennis match resonates with so many folks. That she’s 45, for one thing. Only one woman, Martina Navratilova, ever has won a tour-level singles match while older; her last victory came at 47 in 2004. That Williams hadn’t entered a tournament anywhere in 16 months. That she needed surgery for uterine fibroids. And when asked Tuesday night after beating her 23-year-old opponent, Peyton Stearns, 6-3, 6-4 at the DC Open what message others might take away from that performance and that result, Williams was quick to provide an answer about there being no limits for excellence.
NASCAR will hold first street race on active military base at Naval Base Coronado in 2026
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR will hold a street race on Naval Base Coronado in Southern California next June as a replacement for its downtown Chicago event that ran the last three years. The move to the San Diego area doesn’t eliminate a return to Chicago, where NASCAR will still maintain an office and effort an eventual return, perhaps as early as 2027. But the shift next year will allow NASCAR to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy by hosting all three of its national series over a three-day weekend on June 19-21.
Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba of Inter Miami to miss MLS All-Star Game in Austin
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Lionel Messi will miss the Major League Soccer All-Star Game against Liga MX on Wednesday night. Messi’s teammate at Inter Miami, Jordi Alba, will also miss the game. An MLS spokesperson said Inter Miami informed league officials that the two players will not appear in the match at Q2 Stadium. Both could face a one-match suspension for missing the All-Star Game without a credible injury report. The league will speak with Inter Miami officials before providing an update on possible suspensions. Messi missed the All-Star Game last year with an injury.
Verlander ends historic 16-game winless streak as Devers’ 2 homers power Giants past Braves 9-3
ATLANTA (AP) — Justin Verlander has ended the longest winless streak for a Giants pitcher in a single season. He led San Francisco to a 9-3 victory Wednesday over the Atlanta Braves. Verlander, who signed a one-year deal in January, allowed just one hit in five scoreless innings. Rafael Devers drove in four runs with three hits, including two home runs. He hit a homer in the fifth inning and added a three-run shot in the sixth. The Giants outscored the Braves 18-3 in the final two games of the series. Matt Chapman added a two-run homer for San Francisco.
A list of sports organizations that have begun transgender competition bans
The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee has become the latest governing body in the sports world to enact a policy change around transgender athlete competition. Others that have clarified or altered such rules this year include the International Cycling Union, the World Aquatics organization, the World Boxing Organization, the World Athletics Council and National Collegiate Athletic Association. U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order in February that threatens to rescind funding from American organizations that allow transgender women to compete in women’s sporting events.
Jannik Sinner rehires the fitness coach he fired for playing a role in his doping case
ROME (AP) — Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has rehired Umberto Ferrara as his fitness coach nearly a year after firing him for his role in the top-ranked player’s doping case. The move comes after Sinner recently removed fitness coach Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio from his team. A statement from Sinner’s team says “Umberto has played an important role in Jannik’s development to date and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level.” Ferrara purchased the product that led to Sinner’s three-month ban earlier this year.
Sprains, strains and ACL tears: What to know about some of NFL players’ most common injuries
NFL players face a variety of injuries that can impact their season. Common issues include Achilles tendon tears, ACL and other knee ligament injuries, and concussions. Achilles tears often require surgery and months of recovery. Knee ligament injuries, such as ACL tears, can end seasons, while concussions remain a major concern despite improved helmets. Hamstring injuries, high ankle sprains, and hip pointers vary in severity but can sideline players for weeks or months. Other notable injuries include Lisfranc fractures, meniscus tears, oblique strains, patellar tendon injuries, plantar fasciitis, and turf toe. These injuries highlight the physical toll of the NFL season.
‘Happy Gilmore’ became a cult comedy. 29 years later, Adam Sandler is swinging again
NEW YORK (AP) — Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore” became one of the most beloved comedies of the ’90s and codified the hockey-style swing as a mainstay on golf courses. “A hop, skip and a hit,” as Sandler says. “Happy Gilmore” made comic heroes of Bob Barker, Christopher McDonald and Carl Weathers, and turned lines like “Are you too good for your home?” plausible things to ask golf balls. Now, nearly three decades later, and after years of batting away pleas for a sequel, Sandler has finally put Happy’s Bruins jersey back on. “Happy Gilmore 2” debuts Friday on Netflix and is arguably the most anticipated streaming release of the summer.
