Commanders GM says non-football topics such as President Trump’s comments don’t reach him
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Washington’s NFL franchise used to be in the news all the time for reasons other than football. That seemed to have changed under new team ownership, but President Donald Trump’s remarks about the team name and possibly holding up a stadium deal are making waves just as training camp opens. Still, Commanders general manager Adam Peters made clear Tuesday — at a news conference with coach Dan Quinn a day before the team’s first training camp practice — that he doesn’t expect any of that sort of outside conversation to interfere with their real jobs.
Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson does not report to training camp amid contract dispute
CINCINNATI (AP) — All-Pro defensive end Trey Hendrickson will not be with the Cincinnati Bengals for the start of training camp. As Bengals veterans reported on Tuesday, Hendrickson posted on his Instagram reel that he is in Florida. Hendrickson is seeking a long-term extension with an amount of guaranteed money that matches what the league’s top pass rushers are earning. He is scheduled to earn $15.8 million in base salary this season and has a cap number of $18.7 million. He did not attend last month’s mandatory minicamp, but did make an appearance during an offseason workout in May to vent his frustrations about negotiations.
Scottie Scheffler comparisons might be closer to Jack Nicklaus than Tiger Woods
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — As great as Scottie Scheffler is playing, it’s still a little early for comparisons. And they might be more appropriate with Jack Nicklaus than with Tiger Woods. Scheffler won the British Open for his fourth major in the last three years. He seems to win them with ease. But he doesn’t have the appeal of Woods or the dynamic moments. He is methodical like Nicklaus. But similarities come from their priorities. Nicklaus was all about his wife and five children. Scheffler says he’s just a normal guy and doesn’t think that changes because he shoots the lowest score.
WNBA set to quickly tip off second half of season after short All-Star break
NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA tips off the second half of its season on Tuesday night with 10 of the 13 teams playing. Players weren’t thrilled having to play so soon after the All-Star break and hope to add more of a break in the next collective bargaining agreement that they are currently negotiating with the league. Atlanta has back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday while New York and many other teams have three games this week.
Liverpool, Wrexham and Wales soccer hero Joey Jones has died at 70
Former Liverpool and Wales soccer hero Joey Jones has died. He was 70. Jones won two European Cups for Liverpool and was also dubbed “Mr Wrexham”. His death was confirmed by the Football Association of Wales and Wrexham. Wrexham said he had died in the early hours of the morning after a “battle with illness.” Jones won five major trophies for Liverpool, including back-to-back European Cups in 1977 and 1978, as well as the English league title in 1977. He also won the UEFA Cup and European Super Cup for the Merseyside club.
Republican Jim Jordan deposed in federal suit tied to sex abuse by late Ohio State team doctor
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A court filing shows Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan was questioned under oath about the sexual abuse of Ohio State University athletes decades ago by a team doctor. Jordan’s deposition Friday came in a federal lawsuit former student-athletes brought against the university alleging it failed to stop abuse by Dr. Richard Strauss, who died in 2005. Jordan was an assistant wrestling coach from 1986 to 1994, a tenure that overlapped with Strauss’s. Many ex-wrestlers have accused him of knowing about and ignoring the abuse. His office reiterated Jordan was unaware of Strauss’ crimes or “he would have dealt with it.”
From IR and PUP to practice squads: What do NFL roster designations mean?
NFL rosters constantly evolve as general managers juggle injuries, evaluations and potential player acquisitions. Teams start training camp with 90 players, but only 53 make the active roster for the regular season. Injured players may be placed on injured reserve, requiring them to miss at least four games. The physically unable to perform list is for players with football-related injuries who haven’t practiced yet. Non-football injuries or illnesses are handled separately. Suspended players don’t count against rosters. Practice squads allow up to 17 players, including veterans, but they can only play if promoted to the active roster.
Paret-Peintre wins Tour de France stage on Mont Ventoux, where Pogačar deals Vingegaard another blow
MONT VENTOUX, France (AP) — Valentin Paret-Peintre has triumphed on Mont Ventoux to become the first home rider to win a stage at this year’s Tour de France. Tadej Pogačar has consolidated his overall lead. Paret-Peintre finished just ahead of former leader Ben Healy in a sprint for the line at the top of the famed mountain known as the “Beast of Provence.” Santiago Buitrago was third ahead of Paret-Peintre’s teammate Ilan Van Wilder and fifth-placed Pogačar, who withstood repeated attacks from Jonas Vingegaard to cross the line 2 seconds before his main rival. Pogačar stretched his overall lead to 4 minutes, 15 seconds over the Danish rider.
India captain Gill accuses England of violating ‘spirit of the game’ ahead of 4th cricket test
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Tensions are rising ahead of the fourth test between England and India at Old Trafford. India captain Shubman Gill says England acted against the “spirit of the game” by delaying play in last week’s heated third Test at Lord’s. Gill was not happy about England batsmen Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett being late to the crease on the third day of the test, which the host won by 22 runs to take a 2-1 series lead. A flashpoint came when England’s openers had to bat out the final seven minutes, but India was only able to get through one over.
Chiefs press on with stadium negotiations on both sides of the Kansas-Missouri state line
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are negotiating stadium deals with lawmakers in Kansas and Missouri, raising questions about their future at Arrowhead Stadium. The team recently received an extension on a Kansas financing package, signaling a possible move from Missouri. Meanwhile, Missouri has offered funding, including bonds and tax credits, to keep the Chiefs. Both states are competing to secure the franchise. Arrowhead’s lease expires in 2031. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is weighing renovation or building a new enclosed stadium. The Kansas City Royals, sharing the current complex, plan to build a ballpark elsewhere.
