MIAMI (AP) — Real Madrid says forward Kylian Mbappe has been hospitalized with an acute case of gastroenteritis. World Cup winner Mbappe missed Madrid’s opening game at the Club World Cup against Saudi Arabian team Al Hilal in Miami on Wednesday because of a fever. Coach Xabi Alonso said the France international was in “rough shape” and hadn’t been able to train for days. His hospitalization casts doubt over what part he might be able to play in the monthlong tournament in the United States, with Madrid facing Pachuca in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday.

NFL widows struggled to care for ex-players with CTE. They say a new study minimizes their pain
BOSTON (AP) — Dozens of widows and other caregivers for former NFL players diagnosed with CTE say a published study is insulting and dismissive of their experience living with the degenerative brain disease. An open letter signed by the players’ wives, siblings and children says the study suggests their struggles caring for loved ones was due to “media hype” about chronic traumatic encephalopathy. They called that patronizing and offensive. CTE has been linked to concussions and other repeated head trauma. It can lead to memory loss, violent mood swings and depression. The study’s authors say there was no intent to minimize the disease or the caregivers’ struggles.

Gauff had a bye to the second round at the grass-court tournament, a warmup for Wimbledon. Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka finished off Rebeka Masarova 6-2, 7-6 (6) in a match that was suspended Wednesday after one set because of a slippery court.
Former Jets and Ravens linebacker C.J. Mosley announces his retirement after 11 years in NFL
C.J. Mosley, a five-time Pro Bowl selection during an 11-year NFL career with the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens, announced on his 33rd birthday that he’s retiring from playing football. Mosley was released by the Jets in March after playing in just four games last season because of a toe injury and later a herniated disk in his neck. A popular playmaker and leader during his career, Mosley made his announcement with a 2-minute, 10-second video post on his Instagram page that included highlights of his playing career. Mosley, was the 17th overall pick by Baltimore in the 2014 draft out of Alabama.

Gary Gilmore said he has had no second thoughts about retiring after last season even though the Chanticleers are on this sensational run. The 67-year-old Gilmore attended no Coastal Carolina games this season until the Chanticleers’ first two in the CWS last weekend. He sat in the stands at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha. He and his family will be back when the best-of-three finals against LSU start Saturday.
Shohei Ohtani will pitch for the Dodgers against the Nationals on Sunday
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani will next pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday against the Washington Nationals. The two-way superstar made his mound debut for the Dodgers on Monday against the San Diego Padres, throwing one inning and allowing one run and two hits. He also batted leadoff as the designated hitter and had two hits. Ohtani faced Padres sluggers Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado in his 28-pitch outing. The Dodgers conclude their four-game series with San Diego on Thursday night, looking for a sweep and their sixth straight victory overall.
