BOONE, N.C. – Megan Walker was voted the week five Community Coffee Player of Week, the Sun Belt announced on Thursday. She is the first Mountaineer to win a Sun Belt weekly award since joining the conference.
Walker was certainly a contributing factor in the Mountaineers’ first-ever Sun Belt sweep over Georgia Southern this weekend. She batted a perfect 7-7 in the first two games of the conference opener and finished the weekend going 8-11, including two doubles and three RBI.
She batted .533 last week including the midweek win against Tennessee State, raising her season batting average to .224 for the fifth highest average on the team. In the Sun Belt series alone, Walker batted .727 with her eight hits.
Walker also placed her name in the record book for recording four hits in game one against the Eagles, tying the most hits in a single game in program history.
In addition, Walker was an asset to the Mountaineer defense. In game two against the Eagles, Walker made the game-ending diving play to capture the 7-0 shutout for the Mountaineers and the series victory over the Eagles. She contributed four putouts for the Mountaineers from centerfield with six total on the week.
The Mountaineers continue their journey to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a three-game series against ULM in Monroe, La. March 15-17.
