BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State Softball (14-7) extended its win streak to five games after taking game one, 4-2, of Wednesday’s doubleheader but dropped game two against the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, 9-6.
Game One (W, 4-2)
The top of the lineup produced for the Apps in game one. Keri White, Caylie Kifer and Haley Stewart combined hit three of the Mountaineers’ four hits. Kenzie Longaneckerpicked up her eighth win in the circle, limited the Bulldogs to one walk with six strikeouts and six hits.
App State hopped on the board in the first inning, putting up three runs after singles from White and Stewart and a two-run double from Sidney Russell.
The Mountaineers scored their final run in the bottom of the third inning. White touched base after a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kifer. On a passed ball, White advanced to third base, and Stewart collected the RBI on a groundout to shortstop.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs scored their two runs in the top of the fifth inning after a solo homer and back-to-back doubles, but the Mountaineers remained victorious.
Game Two (L, 6-9)
Stewart went 3-4 in game two. Jenny Dodd hit her third home run of the season. Megan Walker, this week’s Sun Belt Player of the Week, and Russell each had two hits apiece.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs pulled ahead, 6-1 in the top of the third inning after two homers and two doubles. The Apps scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back doubles from Stewart and Russell, but the Bulldogs widened the gap in the top of the sixth, scoring three more runs.
App State made a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning, lessening the Bulldog lead to 9-6, but the Apps were unable to produce the win after a bases-loaded bottom of the seventh inning.
The Mountaineers hit the road for the fourth straight weekend for a Sun Belt series against ULM beginning on Friday, March 15.
