BOONE, N.C. – Head Coach Shelly Hoerner and staff of Appalachian State Softball announced the signing of seven future Mountaineer student-athletes on Wednesday.
“I’m looking forward to having this class on campus next fall,” Hoerner said. “This group is gritty, very athletic and will bring much needed speed to our team. They are also defensively savvy. I am excited that these young women embody all of the core values our program believes in both on and off the field. They will help continue to build our foundation with their blue-collar attitude, talent, and winning mentality.
“As a class, I know they value the tradition of academic excellence as well as being a model citizen of our App and Boone communities. I look forward to each member of this 2019 graduating class to make an impact as a Mountaineer softball player.”
Pembroke Pines, Fla. | Middle Infield
Calandra is a team captain and Offensive MVP on the softball team at Pembroke Pines Charter High School in Pembroke Pines, Fla. She earned all-county second team honors her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. A member of the Lady Lightning travel ball team, Calandra plans to major in biology at App State.
Marshville, N.C. | Utility
With experience as a middle infielder and an outfielder, A. Jones signs as a utility player for the Mountaineers. Her hometown is Marshville, N.C., where she plays for Forest Hills High School. She earned all-conference, all-district and all-state honors at Forest Hills and posted an on-base percentage of over .500 each year. Jones also plays travel softball for the Carolina Elite.
Lindenhurst, Ill. | Catcher
C. Jones will add to the Appalachian roster with experience as a catcher. Her hometown is Lindenhurst, Ill., where she attends Lakes Community High School. She has competed in softball and golf her entire high school career. Jones earned all-academic first-team all-conference, first-team all-area and second team all-state in her junior year. She is also a softball team captain and NLCC’s most improved player.
Jones posted a batting average of .491 as a sophomore and an average of .531 as a junior. Her on-base percentage held steady from .588 in her sophomore season to .589 in her junior year. She also actively competes for the Chicago Cheetahs travel softball team. While at App State, C. Jones plans to major in nursing and or psychology with a minor in Spanish.
Palatine, Ill. | Middle Infielder
Parrot, a middle infielder, comes from Palatine High School in her hometown of Palatine, Ill. A three-year starter at shortstop for the varsity team, Parrot has tallied four home runs, 10 doubles and 28 RBI. Her 61 hits as a starter are third-most in school history. Her .508 career batting average helped propel Palatine High to a third place finish at the 4A state tournament in 2018 as well as regional championships in 2017 and 2018. Parrot also earned third-team all-state honors as a junior. She plays travel softball for the Chicago Cheetahs organization.
Hillsborough, N.J. | Infielder
Smith, a native of Hillsborough, N.J., will be joining the Mountaineer roster for the 2020 season. During her career at Hillsborough High School, she has competed in both soccer and softball. Smith earned all-conference honors in her junior season on the softball team and earned two golden glove awards as well as team MVP. Smith was deemed a captain for both soccer and softball at Hillsborough as well. Smith competes for the Batbusters travel softball team outside of high school.
Kernersville, N.C. | Outfielder
Southern signs to be an outfielder for the Apps. She currently attends East Forsyth High School in Kernersville, N.C., where she plays volleyball and softball. While on the softball team, she earned all-state honors as a sophomore and all-conference honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. Southern was named the recipient of East Forsyth’s “Hustle Award” on volleyball team, and she also plays for the N.C. Firecrackers travel softball team.
Calhoun, Ga. | Middle Infielder
Wilbanks, a Calhoun, Ga. native, attends Calhoun High School and plays travel softball for the East Cobb Bullets. She will join the Mountaineers as a middle infielder on the 2020 roster. Her many honors include being a two-time state champion, a state runner up and a four-time region champion. Wilbanks also earned all-region second team honors. In addition to softball, she also played one year of varsity basketball at Calhoun. She is an active member in her youth group and a member of FCA, FFA and the National Art Honors Society.
