AP freelancer among 5 journalists killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza hospital, health officials say

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Health officials say Israeli strikes on a hospital in southern Gaza have killed five journalists, including a freelancer who worked for The Associated Press. Mariam Dagga was a visual journalist who freelanced for the AP and other other news outlets during the war. The AP said in a statement that it was shocked and saddened to learn of Dagga’s death, along with those of several other journalists. The head of the Health Ministry’s records department said 20 people were killed in Monday’s strikes on Nasser Hospital. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office says the strike was a “tragic mishap” and that the military is investigating.

Israel strikes a Gaza hospital twice, killing at least 20, including journalists and rescuers

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel struck one of the main hospitals in the Gaza Strip and then hit the facility again as journalists and rescue workers rushed to the scene. Health officials said the attack on Monday killed at least 20 people and wounded scores more. It was among the deadliest of several Israeli strikes that have hit both hospitals and journalists over the course of the 22-month war sparked by Hamas’ 2023 assault. The strikes came as Israel plans to widen its offensive to heavily populated areas. The first strike hit a top floor of a building at Nasser Hospital. Minutes later, witnesses said, a second projectile hit as journalists and rescuers rushed up an external staircase.

Trump’s initial warning to South Korea’s Lee turns into warm welcome after flattery

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung had a friendly interaction before the cameras at the White House that was far different than Trump’s warnings against the new leader earlier Monday. Trump first threatened to cut off business with Seoul but later Monday was far more cordial as Lee repeatedly praised Trump on the Oval Office decor, the U.S. economy and his peacemaking efforts. The exchange highlighted how world leaders often use flattery to gain favorable terms from Trump. The meeting marks a foreign policy test for Lee, who took office in June after political turmoil in South Korea.

Schools reopen in Washington with parents on edge over Trump’s armed patrols

WASHINGTON (AP) — Public schools have reopened in the nation’s capital with parents on edge over the presence of thousands of National Guard troops, some armed, and federal law enforcement officers. Even as President Donald Trump again touted a drop in crime he attributed to his extraordinary effort to take over policing in Washington, D.C., the district’s mayor on Monday lamented the effect of Trump’s actions on children. Mayor Muriel Bowser says parents in the city are anxious. She noted that some might keep their children out of school because of immigration concerns.

Trump envoy says officials working ‘very, very hard’ on ending Russia-Ukraine war

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy Keith Kellogg says officials are “working very, very hard” on efforts to end the three-year war between Russia and Ukraine. Kellogg said in Kyiv on Monday that officials are “hoping to get to a position where, in the near term, we have, with a lack of a better term, security guarantees” that address Ukraine’s fears of another invasion by Russia in the future. A lack of progress in talks is fueling doubts about whether a peace settlement could be on the horizon.

Long-elusive Mexican drug lord Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada pleads guilty in US

NEW YORK (AP) — Former Mexican cartel kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to his role in the violent drug trade. For years the operation flooded the U.S. with cocaine, heroin and other illicit substances. The longtime leader in the Sinaloa cartel entered his plea Monday in a Brooklyn federal court. Prosecutors have said they won’t seek the death penalty against the 75-year-old Zambada. He was arrested in Texas last year. Prosecutors say that under Zambada’s leadership and that of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the Sinaloa cartel evolved from a regional player into the world’s largest drug trafficking organization.

Australian Open champion Madison Keys loses in the US Open’s first round to Renata Zarazua of Mexico

NEW YORK (AP) — Australian Open champion Madison Keys has been undone by 89 unforced errors during a 6-7 (10), 7-6 (3), 7-5 loss to Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in the first round of the U.S. Open. The sixth-seeded Keys, who was the runner-up at Flushing Meadows in 2017, made so many mistakes Monday, including 14 double-faults, that Zarazua needed to produce just eight winners to earn the biggest victory of her career. The 82nd-ranked Zarazua had lost in either the first or second round in all eight of her previous Grand Slam appearances. Keys earned her first major championship at Melbourne Park in January, defeating No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
