Wife Dead, Husband Missing After Police Believe Couple’s Valentine’s Day Dog Walk Saw Them Both Fall Through Ice

A woman has died and her husband is missing after police believe they fell through ice while out walking their dog on Valentine’s Day.

On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Eastham Police Department in Massachusetts shared in a press release on Facebook that they responded to a report of a “loose dog” in the parking lot of First Encounter Beach at 9:07 a.m.

The person who called authorities described the dog as “wet” and “appearing to be “in distress.”

When an officer arrived at the scene, a woman was heard screaming for help in the Bee’s River area. The officer located the woman, who had fallen through ice and into the water. They attempted to pull her out of the water, but they both became “completely submerged” after the ice gave away, police said.

A second officer arrived on scene and observed the officer that had entered the water attempting to pull himself back up onto the ice,” the release continued.

The second officer then attempted to go out onto the ice where the woman had fallen, but he also fell into the water after the ice gave way.

”Both officers were able to successfully make it back to the shore,” authorities said. “The Eastham Fire Department arrived on scene and members of the fire department immediately initiated rescue efforts.”

The two officers were taken to hospital for evaluation before the Barnstable County Technical Rescue Team and Dive Team began their rescue operation with divers entering the water to find the woman.

”As rescuers were searching the water, an on-scene investigation revealed that the female party may have been out walking with her husband and dog,” police added. “Based on items located in their vehicle and a check of their residence, it was determined that it was possible that the husband may have fallen through the ice prior to the officer’s arrival.”

The woman was located beneath the ice at 11:12 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.

Nancy Guthrie kidnapping investigators work with Walmart after identifying suspect’s backpack

Investigators working on the disappearance of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother are consulting with Walmart management to develop leads. That’s because a backpack the suspect was wearing is sold exclusively at Walmart stores. Chris Nanos, the sheriff of Pima County, Arizona, told The Associated Press in a text message on Monday that the suspect’s “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack” is the only clothing item that has been “definitively identified.” Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Arizona home on Jan. 31 and was reported missing the following day. The Federal Bureau of Investigation released surveillance videos of a masked person wearing a handgun holster outside Guthrie’s front door the night she vanished.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning actor whose classic roles included the wily confidant of the first two “Godfather” movies, had died at age 95. He first gained notice for a small part as the reclusive neighbor in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” He won an Academy Award as best actor for portraying the over-the-hill country music singer in the 1983 film “Tender Mercies.” He also won four Golden Globes, including one for playing the philosophical cattle-drive boss in the 1989 miniseries “Lonesome Dove,” a role he often cited as his favorite.

Iran meets UN nuclear watchdog in Geneva ahead of a second round of US talks

GENEVA (AP) — Iran’s top diplomat has held talks with the U.N. nuclear watchdog in Geneva a day before a second round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with IAEA chief Rafael Grossi and later planned to hold talks with Oman’s foreign minister. Oman is hosting the U.S.-Iran talks in Geneva on Tuesday. After U.S. President Donald Trump ordered an additional aircraft carrier to the region, Iran on Monday launched a second naval drill in weeks, state TV reported. Also, sailors passing through the region received by radio a warning that the northern lane of the Strait of Hormuz, in Iranian territorial waters, likely would see a live-fire drill.

US troops arrive in Nigeria to help train its military, Nigerian military says

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — The Nigerian military says about 100 U.S. troops plus equipment have arrived in Nigeria to help train soldiers in the West African country. The arrival followed a request by the Nigerian government to the U.S government to for training, technical support intelligence-sharing, the military said in a statement Monday. The deployment follows an easing of tensions that had flared between the U.S. and Nigeria when U.S. President Donald Trump had issued threats against Nigeria over allegations that the government was not protecting its Christian citizens.

Prosecutors plan to charge an Israeli settler with killing a Palestinian activist in the West Bank

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Israeli prosecutors say they plan to charge a settler in the killing of a Palestinian activist during a confrontation that was caught on video. That would open a rare prosecution of violence by Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank. Attacks from settlers and home demolitions by authorities have spiked dramatically over the past two years. But the death in July of Awdah Hathaleen has drawn particular attention due to his involvement in the 2025 Oscar-winning film “No Other Land.” The case also stands out because the confrontation was captured on video from multiple vantage points.

NAACP asks judge to protect against ‘misuse’ of voter data seized by FBI in Georgia’s Fulton County

ATLANTA (AP) — The NAACP and allied groups are asking a judge to limit how the federal government uses voter data seized in an FBI raid near Atlanta. In a motion filed late Sunday, they asked the judge to bar any use beyond the stated criminal investigation. They also asked for a full inventory of what agents took during the Jan. 28 seizure at the Fulton County elections hub and who has accessed it. FBI agents arrived at the elections warehouse with a warrant seeking 2020 Fulton County election records. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

California braces for a major winter storm expected to bring heavy rain and snow

California is bracing for a powerful winter storm anticipated to bring thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy mountain snow. National Weather Service meteorologist Jacob Spender in Sacramento urged people to take precautions in the coming days. He says that if people are traveling, then they should be packing winter safety kits. Winter storm warnings were in place from southwest Oregon to the Southern California border. PG&E says it is using AI and machine-learning weather models to position crews and equipment before the storm hits. Meanwhile, state emergency officials are deploying rescue resources for flooding and debris flows. Forecasters expect extreme Sierra snow through late Wednesday.

Winter Olympics recap: Heartbreak in slalom and Eileen Gu tries to defend big air gold

MILAN (AP) — Eileen Gu is readying to defend her big air ski freestyle title and a Norwegian contender’s emotional reaction overshadowed the last men’s Alpine ski event of the Milan Cortina Olympics. ANOTHER TRANS SHOOTER: Police Confirm Man Who Killed 6 at School Identified as Woman

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have identified the 18-year-old man who shot and killed six people at a school in British Columbia, critically injuring two, and wounding about 25 others. He identified as a woman, authorities have confirmed.

Jesse Van Rootselaar first killed his mother, 39, and his 11-year-old stepbrother at their family home in the remote community of Tumbler Ridge, before targeting Tumbler Ridge Secondary School Tuesday.

At the school, he shot and killed a 39-year-old female teacher, three 12-year-old female students, and two male students, aged 12 and 13. As police arrived, he shot at them, but officers found the shooter dead from an apparent suicide.

“We do believe the suspect acted alone … it would be too early to speculate on motive,” Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said in a press conference Wednesday.

McDonald said Van Rootselaar was born male but began to identify as female six years ago, Reuters reported.

“Yes, that is the information that we have,” RCMP Sergeant Vanessa Munn told The Daily Signal.

The shooting ranks among the deadliest in Canadian history.

Prime Minister Mark Carney postponed his trip to Europe and ordered flags on government buildings to be flown at half-mast for the next seven days.

“Right now, it’s a time to come together, as Canadians always do in these situations, these terrible situations, to support each other, to mourn together and to grow together,” he said.

In April 2020, a 51-year-old man disguised in a police uniform killed 22 people in Nova Scotia in multiple shootings and set fire to homes, before police killed him.

2nd US Aircraft Carrier Being Sent to Middle East

The world’s largest aircraft carrier has been ordered to sail from the Caribbean Sea to the Middle East as President Donald Trump considers whether to take possible military action against Iran.

The move by the USS Gerald R. Ford, according to multiple media reports citing unnamed government officials, will put two carriers and their accompanying warships in the region as Trump increases pressure on Iran to make a deal over its nuclear program.

Trump said earlier this week that he was considering making such a move.

Trump on Thursday warned Iran that failure to reach a deal with his administration would be “very traumatic.” Iran and the United States held indirect talks in Oman last week.

“I guess over the next month, something like that,” Trump said in response to a question about his timeline for striking a deal with Iran on its nuclear program. “It should happen quickly. They should agree very quickly.”
