ICE says an immigrant who died in a sprawling Texas detention facility killed himself
EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Federal officials say an immigrant from Nicaragua has been found dead at a Texas immigration detention facility. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents say 36-year-old Victor Manuel Diaz appears to have killed himself Wednesday at the Army’s Fort Bill base in El Paso. Diaz was detained in Minnesota on January 6th and sent to Texas. He entered the U.S. in March 2024. Diaz was at the same detention facility where ICE says another detainee died as staff members tried to prevent him from killing himself. Local officials say that death appeared to be a homicide as the detainee was being restrained.
NEW YORK (AP) — Reviving a campaign pledge, President Donald Trump wants a one-year, 10% cap on credit card interest rates, a move that could save Americans tens of billions of dollars but drew immediate opposition from an industry that has been in his corner.
Trump was not clear in his social media post Friday night whether a cap might take effect through executive action or legislation, though one Republican senator said he had spoken with the president and would work on a bill with his “full support.” Trump said he hoped it would be in place Jan. 20, one year after he took office.
The US political climate spurs efforts to reclaim the MLK holiday
As communities across the country prepare Monday to host parades, panels and service projects for the 40th anniversary of when the federal government officially began observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the current political climate has left some feeling more fraught than festive when it comes to how to honor the slain civil rights icon. In the year since Donald Trump’s second inauguration fell on the MLK holiday, the Republican president has gone after diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and targeted mostly Black-led cities for federal law enforcement takeovers. Some Black advocacy groups, however, are vowing a day of resistance and rallies nationwide against what they see as an administration that governs with fear-based tactics.
Trump’s Board of Peace has several invited leaders trying to figure out how it’ll work
The EU’s executive arm, Russia, Belarus and Thailand say they’ve been asked to join U.S. President Donald Trump’s new Board of Peace that will supervise the next phase of the Gaza peace plan. Russia and Thailand said they’re looking at the details of what the board’s mandate will be and how it will function. Belarus said it’s ready to join. But Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on Monday dismissed the Board of Peace as a raw deal for Israel and called for its dissolution. The board will oversee the Gaza executive committee that’s tasked with seeing through key provisions of the peace plan, including deployment of an international security force, disarmament of Hamas and the territory’s reconstruction.
