Recently, numerous news outlets reported that Palestinians had been killed by Israeli soldiers at an American aid site in Gaza.
Donald Trump’s ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, claims the stories are all lies. Now he is demanding that the reports be retracted by the outlets that published them.
The suspect in that case was seen raging about children being killed in Gaza, then used homemade Molotov cocktails to attack a group of pro-Israel demonstrators. Prior to that attack, Hamas claimed that Israeli soldiers had killed dozens of civilians near an aid site. After Hamas made its claim, the report went viral here in the U.S., with few outlets bothering to verify the report before posting it. As the day progressed and the IDF pushed back on the claim, stories and headlines were updated, but as we all know, the damage is done by the initial report. For instance, CNN first reported the story, “At least 26 Palestinians killed after Israeli forces open fire near Gaza aid distribution center, health workers say.” It later changed that headline to “Dozens shot dead and injured near Gaza aid hub, health ministry and doctors say.”
The BBC ran a similar headline, then corrected it to read “Israel denies firing at civilians after Hamas-run ministry says 31 killed in Gaza aid centre attack.”
