MTEN: Men’s Tennis Shows Improvement at Elon Invitational

ELON, N.C. – All six student-athletes for Appalachian State University men’s tennis contributed to a solid weekend at the Elon Invitational.

Appalachian totaled 14 victories over the three-day event.

Campbell Stone (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) highlighted the weekend where he advanced to the Powell Singles Flight title, defeating UNCW’s Robinson in three sets before a second straight three-set triumph against UNCG’s Whisnant (2-6, 6-4, 6-2) sent Stone to the finals. Stone fell to Raymundo of James Madison, 6-4, 6-4.

Also making noise was Milo Bargeron (Chislehurst, England/Bullerswood) (Gold Singles) and Will Hart (Vass, N.C./Union Pines) (Powell Singles), who both advanced to the consolation title match. Bargeron downed both of his opponents in three frames, topping Rogowski (UNCG) and James Madison’s Adia (6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 10-6).

Hart, after falling in his match on the first day, reeled off a pair of back-to-back wins against Martherus (UNCW) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, and Jaber (UNCW), 6-3, 7-6 (9).

Both playing in the same singles flight (Phoenix), Zion Heaven (Ewa Beach, HI/Florida Virtual) earned a 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-4 first round win over Ted Williams from Campbell. Blake Carter (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) picked up a victory in the consolation bracket over R. Gende of UNCW (6-4, 7-6 (1).

Ben Webster (Perth, Australia/Scotch College) rounded out the Mountaineers in singles with a 6-1, 7-5 downing of Ben Wayland (Charlotte) in the consolation bracket.

In doubles play, Heaven and Bargeron captured a win in the Maroon Doubles flight against Palmer/Melnik of UNCG, 8-5. Webster and Pavkovich was up to their usual ways with an 8-5 victory over VCU’s Crespo/Zgraggen, while later downing Meekens/Varga of Radford.

Stone and Carter topped Mavlyudov/Robinson from UNC Wilmington.

The Mountaineers will return to action next weekend at the Davidson Invitational Sept. 28-30.
