MSOC: App State 1, Central Arkansas 0 – Final Stats/Recap

CONWAY, Ark. – The Appalachian State men’s soccer team tallied its first Sun Belt win of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating Central Arkansas, 1-0. With the win, App State moves to 7-2-1, 1-0 in the conference. The Bears fall to 4-5-1, 0-1 in the Sun Belt.

This is the Mountaineers’ first 1-0 start to Sun Belt play since 2016.

“We are very pleased to go on the road for a conference game and get three points,” head coach Jason O’Keefe said. “It’s always a difficult thing to do and today we made just enough plays to do that. We will recover and turn our full attention to Howard which will be another difficult Sun Belt game.”
A first half goal was enough for the top Sun Belt defense to close out the win. Camden Holbrook scored his second goal of the season off a mistake from the Central Arkansas goalkeeper, Marc Olsen. Olsen went to clear the ball out of his own box and Holbrook was there to redirect the deflection into the back of the net in the 15th minute of play.
From there, the App State defense shut down the Bears for its fifth shutout of the season. Central Arkansas had seven shots in the first half, with two on goal. Madden came up big for the Mountaineers, making two saves in the first half to take the 1-0 lead into the break.
Central Arkansas looked to equalize in the second half but the Apps’ defense remained solid. Madden made two saves off of six shots taken by the Bears.
Offensively, the Mountaineers were led by Holbrook with two shots and a goal. Nick Rogers also had a scoring opportunity in the second half, taking a hard shot in the middle of the box, but it was right at Olsen.
App State returns home on Oct. 12 to start a three-game homestand beginning with Howard at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
