BOONE, N.C. – App State Men’s Basketball head coach Dustin Kerns announced Friday the renewal of an in-state series between the Mountaineers and Charlotte 49ers, who will face off for each of the next four seasons.
The series will begin early in the 2025-26 season with a Nov. 21 matchup in the Holmes Center, and the teams will alternate November sites every year through 2028, meaning the November 2027 game will also be in Boone. The 2026 and 2028 matchups will be at Halton Arena.
The Mountaineers and 49ers have met 40 previous times, with the last matchup coming in 2022 at Charlotte. The 49ers lead the all-time series 25-15.
Charlotte’s trip to Boone later this year will mark the first time the 49ers have visited the Holmes Center since November 2021. The two teams have squared off six previous times at the Holmes Center, with each team winning three times.
Kerns, who will be entering his seventh season at the helm of the Mountaineers in 2025-26, has yet to post a losing season at App State, marking the program’s longest stretch with a winning percentage of .500 or better since 1946-52. The Mountaineers have compiled a 25-4 record over the last two seasons at the Holmes Center.
The addition of Charlotte to the 2025-26 schedule will mark the second year in a row that App State takes on an AAC foe. App State announced a home-and-home series with North Texas in October 2024 and traveled to play the Mean Green in Denton, Texas, last December. App State is 46-68 all-time against current AAC foes.
