NEW ORLEANS – The second matchups of the MAC-SBC Challenge – a scheduling alliance in the sports of men’s and women’s basketball – have been announced by both leagues.
The App State men’s basketball team will host Toledo in the Holmes Convocation Center at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, while the women will head to Kalamazoo, Mich., to take on Western Michigan the same day. Each game will be carried on an ESPN platform.
Matchups were set based on real-time NET rankings. The Mountaineer men are currently atop the Sun Belt standings at 6-1 (15-4 overall), while the Rockets are tied for second in the MAC at 5-1 (11-7 overall). On the women’s side, App State is tied for fifth at 4-3 (10-8 overall), while Western Michigan is tied for seventh at 2-4 (7-9 overall).
App State split its matchups in the first round of the MAC-SBC Challenge, with the women’s team defeating Ohio in Boone, while the men fell to Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Ill., on Nov. 11.
The men are 2-0 all-time against the Rockets. The last meeting was Dec. 3, 1999, at the Marquette Tournament in Milwaukee, Wis.
This will be the first meeting between the App State and Western Michigan women.
Each MAC and Sun Belt team included in the MAC-SBC Challenge, currently scheduled to take place during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 campaigns, is guaranteed one home and one away game each season.
Scheduling assistance is provided by Ordinal Sports Group. In addition to relevant NET data, geography and frequency of past contests are considered in determining the matchups.
