NEW ORLEANS – Senior point guard Myles Tate has been named App State’s first Sun Belt Player of the Week this season after helping lead the Mountaineers’ men’s basketball team to an undefeated week against Southern Miss and Ohio. Tate becomes the fourth different player to win Sun Belt Player of the Week in the Dustin Kerns era.
The Spartanburg, S.C., native did a little bit of everything this past week, averaging 17.5 points, nine assists and six rebounds per contest.
In App State’s win over Southern Miss to open the week, Tate flirted with a triple-double by tallying eight points, a career-high 11 assists and seven rebounds. Tate’s 11th and final assist came on CJ Huntley’s game-winning, buzzer-beating dunk. With those 11 assists, he became just the 16th Mountaineer in program history to record at least 11 assists in a game. As of last week, he is one of two Sun Belt players to boast two games with at least 10 assists this season.
Tate delivered one of the best games of his career Saturday at Ohio, as he tallied a career-best 27 points, seven assists and five rebounds. The point guard was instrumental in the Mountaineers’ comeback effort after being down six points at halftime, as he scored eight of App State’s 13 points during its 13-0 second-half run to take control of the game. He totaled 18 points after the break.
The dynamic performance marked his 11th 20-point game of the season, a total that leads the Sun Belt. Entering action this week, he sits third in the league in scoring, first in assists and second in steals.
Tate and the Mountaineers will take the floor next on Thursday in Conway, S.C., against Coastal Carolina. Tipoff from the HTC Center is slated for 7 p.m., and the game can be streamed on ESPN+.
