MBB: App State Grinds Out 57-50 Win Over UT Arlington

 

BOONE, N.C. — O’Showen Williams scored a career-high 25 points as App State men’s basketball posted a victory 57-50 over UT Arlington on Thursday evening in the Holmes Center.

Williams bettered his previous career-high of 22 points, set earlier this season at ETSU and during the 2017-18 season. He scored 17 of his 25 points in the first half and finished 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the field, while adding six rebounds.

Hunter Seacat tied his season-high with 13 points on 6-of-7 (85.7 percent) shooting to go along with four rebounds. Isaac Johnson chipped in with seven points, a game-high 10 rebounds, a team-high tying four assists and a team-best three steals.

The App State (13-11, 7-6 SBC) defense was tough all night, limiting the Mavericks (10-14, 6-7 SBC) to just 36.2 percent (21-of-58) shooting and a 2-of-24 (8.3 percent) mark on three-pointers. The Mountaineers also outscored UT Arlington 32-24 in the paint and held a 41-32 edge in the rebounding battle.

After UTA jumped out to an early 7-4 lead, the Mountaineers scored the next five points to open their first lead of the game at 9-7. App State used a 7-0 run to snap a 14-14 tie, with Williams scoring five of the seven points during the spurt. The Mavericks came right back with the next nine points to take a 23-21 lead, but the Black and Gold closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 31-25 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Mavericks cut the App State lead to a point at 38-37, before the Black and Gold answered right back with five straight points to open a 43-37 advantage with 11:12 remaining. From there, UTA cut the Mountaineers lead to two three times, but the the Black and Gold used a 6-0 run to build a 55-47 lead with 1:32 to go. The Mavericks pulled within six, but App State drained a pair of free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Brian Warren paced UT Arlington with 14 points and David Azore added 12 points.
