|BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College Skiing & Snowboarding team traveled to Lake Placid, New York to compete at the USCSA Nationals last month. The week-long event was held at Whiteface Mountain (site of 1980 Winter Olympics) and included more than 500 student-athletes.
The team has worked hard throughout the season to qualify for Regionals and then performed well enough to get an invite to Nationals. One of those top performers was Alex Broussard who won the RailJam competition at Regionals and helped the team advance.
At Nationals Lees-McRae student-athletes competed in Snowboarder Cross, Railjam, Slopestyle, Slalom and Giant Slalom. As a team LMC placed 16th in Cross, tie for 15th in Railjam, 13th in Slopestyle, 9th in Slalom and 7th in Giant Slalom.
“Although it was wonderful to have snow every day, it makes it tough to compete with limited visibility and slower courses. I’m super proud of everybody who competed,” said LMC Head Coach Aaron Maas. “I certainly didn’t hear any of the athletes complain about conditions when they were hitting fresh powder lines all the way down the mountain.”
Whiteface Mountain received over 20 inches of snow during the week with over a foot falling in 24 hours.
A special thanks to the following seniors who competed in their final season with the team: Dylan Adams, Carson Bazemore, Josh Cady, Jenny Lewis and Bear Stevenson. Thanks for everything you’ve done and good luck in the future.
