BOONE, N.C. — Recent Appalachian State men’s basketball graduate Griffin Kinney has signed a contract with the Dutch professional basketball club Aris Leeuwarden.
Aris Leeuwarden is a member of the Dutch Professional League, which is the highest professional basketball league in the Netherlands. Aris Leeuwarden has been a member of the league since 2004, reaching the finals in the 2012-13 season.
“We are very proud of Griff for signing with Aris Leeuwarden,” said Appalachian State head coach Jim Fox. “The amount of work he has put in to become a pro is a credit to his work ethic. We are extremely happy for him and can’t wait to see him play in Holland.”
Kinney was a four-year standout at forward for the Mountaineers. In his career, he appeared in 122 games, which ranks sixth in program history, averaging 7.7 points on 51.2 percent shooting and 4.9 rebounds.
Kinney posted his strongest season in 2017-18, playing and starting in all 33 games. He averaged a career-high 10.5 points on a career-best 58.3 percent shooting. In addition, he also recorded career-highs in field goals made (130), assists (44) and steals (19). On Dec. 9 at Akron, Kinney tallied a career-high 28 points, to go along with six rebounds and two assists.
Leeuwarden is the capital of the province of Friesland, which is located in the northeastern portion of the Netherlands. The 2018-19 Dutch Professional League season will open in October and run through May.
