The 31st annual Blue Ridge Brutal bike ride is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2020, in Ashe County. The ride offers options of 56 miles, 72 miles, and 100 mile rides – all including scenic stretches on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Last year’s ride had nearly 400 participants, 90% of whom were visitors to the Ashe County area. The economic impact of last year’s ride on the local economy was approximately $82,000 spent by visiting riders in area restaurants and businesses.
The 2020 Blue Ridge Brutal will be organized and held by the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce. In past years, the Blue Ridge Brutal has been organized by and served as a fundraiser for the Ashe Civic Center; however, the Chamber will designate all funds be applied to the Ashe Advantage Project, its scholarship program for local students. The Brutal Committee has done tremendous work in keeping the ride going for thirty years and will share their expertise with the Chamber as it takes on responsibility for The Brutal going forward. Given the strong economic impact of the ride on area businesses, the Chamber feels that The Brutal is well matched to its missions of driving local commerce and tourism. Also, with a strong membership, the Chamber is eager to have the help of many volunteers prior to and on the day of The Brutal. If you are interested in serving on the Brutal committee or volunteering for the ride, please call the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce at 336-846-9550.
