Oil prices rise, global stock markets drop … Commercial airlines avoid Iranian airspace … Nissan’s disgraced Ghosn to speak
BEIJING (AP) – Oil prices rose and global stock markets fell today after Iran fired missiles at U.S. bases in Iraq in retaliation for the killing of an Iranian general. Brent crude futures, the benchmark for international oils, spiked more than $3 per barrel in London before retreating. Stock markets in London and Frankfurt opened lower and Tokyo’s benchmark fell nearly 2% before recovering some of its losses. Hong Kong and Shanghai also retreated. Wall Street is expected to open lower, with S&P futures down 0.2% and Dow futures down 0.4%.
BEIRUT (AP) – The disgraced former chairman of Nissan is expected to speak to journalists in Beirut, more than a week after his dramatic escape from Japan ahead of his trial for alleged financial misconduct. The highly anticipated news conference by Carlos Ghosn (gohn) will be his first public appearance since he smuggled himself from Tokyo to Beirut. He grew up in the Lebanese capital and is regarded by many as a national hero.
NEW DELHI (AP) – Commercial airlines are rerouting flights crossing the Middle East to avoid possible danger amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Australian carrier Qantas says it’s altering its London to Perth, Australia, routes to avoid Iran andáIraq airspace until further notice. Malaysia Airlines says that “due to recent events,” its planes would avoid Iranian airspace. Singapore Airlines also says its flights to Europe would avoid Iran. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has barred American pilots and carriers from flying in areas of Iraqi, Iranian and some Persian Gulf airspace.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California Gov. Gavin Newsom is asking for $750 million in part to help pay rent for people facing homelessness in the most populous state’s latest attempt to fight what he calls a national crisis. Newsom plans to sign an executive order today creating the fund, two days before he presents his second annual budget proposal to the state Legislature. The governor also has directed the state to provide local governments with 100 travel trailers and tents for temporary housing and services.
LAS VEGAS (AP) – The decision to invite Ivanka Trump to speak at the nation’s largest consumer electronics show in Las Vegas has renewed criticism about the show’s commitment to diversity. Critics say it was wrong to invite the president’s daughter and a White House adviser to speak in a prominent keynote slot when so many women in tech have felt sidelined in the past. Ivanka Trump is supposed to discuss strategies to retrain workers.áShe has worked on skills-training initiatives for the White House.
