US stocks mixed … Still no pay for many federal workers … Mastercard to drop name in logo

NEW YORK (AP) – U.S. stocks are mixed as representatives from the U.S. and China start a new round of trade talks. At 10:31 a.m. Eastern Time, the S&P 500 was up 5 points, at 2,537. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 8 points, to 23,421. And the Nasdaq was up 39 points, to 6,778.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Hundreds of thousands of federal workers continue to go without pay as the partial government shutdown is in its third week. President Donald Trump is standing firm in his demands for more than $5 billion toward a border wall, and newly empowered House Democrats are planning to step up pressure on Trump and Republican lawmakers to reopen the government.

NEW YORK (AP) – Mastercard says it is dropping its name in some contexts, opting to let its familiar interlocking yellow and red circles represent the company at retail locations and online. The company says the logo has represented Mastercard so well for more than 50 years and that 80 percent of people recognize the logo without the word “Mastercard” accompanying it.

UNDATED (AP) – Eli Lilly is spending about $8 billion in cash to buy Loxo Oncology, as the drugmaker bulks up on cancer treatments that target certain gene abnormalities. Lilly says that Loxo Oncology could launch a drug next year and targets an abnormality that occurs in several tumor types, including some lung and thyroid cancers. Shares of Eli Lilly, based in Indianapolis, fell nearly 3 percent to $111.39 in today’s premarket trading.

LONDON (AP) – Britain is testing how its motorway and ferry system would handle a no-deal Brexit by sending a stream of trucks from a regional airport to the port of Dover – even as some legislators try to pressure the government to rule out the scenario. The tests began this morning and are intended to gauge how severe the disruption would be if Britain leaves the European Union on March 29 without an agreed upon withdrawal deal.
