CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Appalachian State University field hockey (4-3) fell 6-0 to No. 1 North Carolina (7-0) on Tuesday night.
The Mountaineers faced an undefeated Tar Heels’ team that was picked to win the Atlantic Coast Conference. North Carolina made a Final Four appearance after winning the ACC Tournament in 2017.
Appalachian finished with six shots, two of which were on target. Freshman Roxy Day recorded the pair of shots on goal in the second half. Sophomore Veerle Van Heertum tied Day for the team lead with two shots apiece.
After being announced the MAC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week earlier today, sophomore Annette Jarosz made another defensive save — her second in the past three contests. Freshman Brenna Schoenbachler also notched a defensive save for the Mountaineers.
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Gaines made five saves in the first half. Redshirt-freshman Madison Nuckols started in net the second half, making a pair of saves.
Appalachian held UNC scoreless before an over 90-minute rain delay. After the restart, the Tar Heels netted the opening goal in the 11th minute. North Carolina tacked on three more goals in the opening half, taking a 4-0 lead into the break.
The Mountaineers will open Mid-American Conference play Saturday at Ohio at noon.
