BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State linebacker Jordan Fehr, running back Darrynton Evans and receiver Thomas Hennigan have made the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District Football Team.
Selected by CoSIDA, the teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Fehr, Evans and Hennigan are members of the 25-player District 3 team that includes FBS and FCS players from the states of North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Possessing a 3.81 GPA as a management major, Fehr has emerged as one of the Sun Belt Conference’s top defensive players as a junior. He has 61 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 6.0 tackles for loss and one fumble to help lead a group that ranks first in the league in scoring defense (15.8 points), total defense (277.7 yards), passing defense (154.4 yards) and rushing defense (123.2 yards).
A two-time Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week, Fehr’s 4.0 sacks in league games rank third in the conference. In his five full Sun Belt games (he had two tackles before leaving the Georgia Southern game in the first quarter), Fehr is averaging 9.0 tackles per game, a total that would rank third in Sun Belt play behind defenders from Texas State and South Alabama.
Evans, a redshirt sophomore who has a 3.52 GPA as a communication studies major, averages a league-leading 153.3 all-purpose yards per Sun Belt game. His 111.2 rushing yards per game in league play is one-tenth of a yard behind first place, as Evans has posted 100-yard rushing games against Arkansas State (115), Louisiana (183) and Coastal Carolina (159). He opened the season at Penn State with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown before App State’s offense even took the field, and he has rushed for 733 yards with six touchdowns while averaging 6.5 yards per carry.
A management major with a 3.78 GPA as a sophomore, Hennigan has started all 22 games in his App State career. He has 20 catches for 206 yards this season, a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown that contributes to a 20.2 average on punt returns and a 23.9 average on kickoff returns.
Academic All-District honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot. First- and second-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in early December.
