BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State sophomore Darrynton Evans was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Co-Offensive Player of the Week based off his career-best rushing performance in a win against Louisiana on Saturday.
Evans rushed for 183 yards on 26 carries and scored two touchdowns, including a tiebreaking one on a 20-yard reception late in the first half. The first receiving touchdown of his career helped Evans amass 203 all-purpose yards, with 65 coming on a third-quarter run that set up another touchdown for the Mountaineers, who are ranked No. 25 in this week’s AP Poll. App State (5-1, 3-0) faces Georgia Southern on Thursday night in a first-place showdown that will be televised by ESPNU.
In conference games, Evans leads the Sun Belt in rushing yards per game (119.7) and all-purpose yards per game (142.0). He became App State’s primary running back during the Mountaineers’ second conference game and followed a 115-yard rushing effort at Arkansas State with his standout performance against Louisiana. For the year, he is averaging 7.0 yards per carry with 425 yards on 61 attempts.
The 183 rushing yards rank as the second-highest total by a Sun Belt player this season. He shared the Sun Belt’s weekly award with Arkansas State quarterback Justice Hansen, who had a hand in five touchdowns.
