Dear Pastor and Church Leaders,
I am asking for your and your congregation’s support in helping our local
Detention Center. There are several ways a church can be involved in helping
those incarcerated: Second Mile Ministry, Bible Blitz, Holiday Helps, CCC
Ministry, IPM, and Tender Teddy.
*Second Mile Ministry (Matt. 5:41): We have partnered with ACTA so that
a church or individual can give directly to ACTA to provide transportation
to inmates that do not have a ride to make it safely home. This is mainly
for inmates that are SMCP, which means they come from another county,
and the jail is not responsible to provide them a return trip home. This
also helps decrease homelessness in the county.
*Bible Blitz (Mark 4:14): There are several ways to help with this. Inmates
are always asking for large print Bibles. Churches can give Bibles, Bible
studies, or books (no hardbacks or staples). Also, Badges of Ashe will take
any donations earmarked to Chaplain’s Ministries to be applied to this
cause. Churches can give plastic (not metal) reading glasses as well. We
would also like to say a special thank you to the Gideons for the Bibles
they currently provide to the detention center.
*Holiday Helps (1 Corinthians 12:28): Churches can give gift bags to
inmates during Christmas or other holidays. Acceptable items include
candy, word searches, hygiene items, playing cards, tracks, and devotions.
Prohibited items: no items with metal or staples; no long pencils, long
pens, or long toothbrushes; and no handmade food. Call 336-846-5610 for
any questions on item eligibility. All items are subject to dismissal by the
jail staff.

*Clothes, Coats, & Cloaks Ministry (Matt. 5:40): The jail has partnered up
with the Salvation Army to help supply clothes for inmates when they are
released or for funerals. They need clothes because of the difference in
times of the year when they are incarcerated and released. Also, if they
have lost or gained weight (we have great cooks at the jail). You can help
by supporting the Salvation Army through clothes donations or
purchasing items. Inmates always need undergarments, even during
incarceration. Thank you so much, Salvation Army, for helping us.
*Intercessory Prayer Ministry (Ephesians 6:18): If there are any prayer
warriors out there that would pray over requests that I would send by
email or text. Please contact me at: pa*****************@sk*****.com.
*Tender Teddy (Mark 10:14): This is a stuffed animal drive, so our officers
and deputies have teddy bears and blankets to comfort kids in dire
circumstances.
Pastors, if you have a church member or family of a church member in our local
jail, you can visit them through a system by phone or computer known as
Homewav. Contact me for information. Also, I hope to implement a future
project called “Reboot.” This would help inmates that are wanting to change and
pursue education, establish a career, and find housing after release. Please pray
for that to come to fruition. Sheriff Howell & I are available to speak to a
congregation or group about these items and other ACSO activities: Sheriff
Reading Program, Back 2 School Blast, Rooftop Cops, Halloween Map,
Christmas with Cops, Blood Drives, Medicine Drop, or Baby Box. Thank you in
advance for your support and may God Bless you and your church.
God Bless,
Michael Carter, Ashe County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain
